Default Looking to get into bikes

Hey guys. I'm new to bikes and I would really like to get into them. I'm 18 so I'm young. I want to know what you guys think about what bikes to start/practice on and how I should go about this. I don't know anything about bikes or how to ride. I want to start off with a small bike and just cruise. I really don't want the bike to go fast. I want a bike basically to cruise around town and down PCH. Could you guys give me some ideas as to how to start out? Also, how much is insurance for a lad as young as I am?

Take the MSF course.

Budget atleast $1000 for gear.

Price insurance rates BEFORE you buy a bike.

Buy used.

Don't finance.

I started riding two years ago when I was 17, read the sticky at the top and good luck.

I started riding when I was 15.

Started out with some tips from my dad on our '82 Yamaha 400, but couldn't quite get the hang of it. Taking the MSF course sure fixed that. Try to get into a crowd with bikes? It helps to make friends with fellow bikers that would let you practice on an old bike or something, and perhaps find a killer deal on something decent.

Then what sup gurl said.
