gas mileage
i tried to search but the search system is wack, soo i have a stock 98 cx hatch and it tough to get 300mpg to the tank. is there anything i need to know about this motor? is runs great with no check light and no starting/idleing problem. changed all the fluids/air filter/ spark plugs with .044 gapping. i checked the both o2 sensors, one seems new with a clean charco look while the other top one has turned white on one side while the other is alittle rusted, could this be my problem or do all d16 motor get 300mpg with 120k miles on the clock? i tried those stp products to clean the system but no help. any advise would be great.
close to 300 mpg per tank is average.
If anything you're losing a dollar or two per tank. Not a big deal.
You spent more trying to find the source than it would cost you at that rate over a year.
Your gas mileage is in the ballpark of what it should be.

LOTS and LOTS of factors. Town driving vs highway and so forth. But more are in like an intake and more air out like an exhaust would also help gas. Lighter the load in the car better the gas mileage. My 97 HB does not quite get 300 but i am all stop and go traffic.

no. its a 10 gallon tank and your car will not get 40mpg, even if you drove only on the freeway.
I got like 260-280 out of a tank before i felt uncomforable with the low level and filled up, even then I had a bit to go.
The thing is, the EPA does "highway" testing at 49mph to acheive the highway mpg ratings you see on cars. Now how many of us drive 49mph on the freeway?

I have a 97 dx coupe with i/h/e, fpr set at factory settings, and ex Intake manifold. I work 7on/7off and drive roughly 70 miles total to work and back. I have about 155,000 miles on the engine and I drive about 80-85 mph going to work and 75-80 on the way back. I do sometime bounce it off the rev limiter getting on the freeway and I average about 375 miles per tank, sometimes I get around 430 if I take it easy on the throttle.
So you might say that that is all freeway driving but I cant make it on a full tank when I work the 7 days (70x7=490) i have to fill up. so I would have to say about 65-75% is freeway.
I did notice a big change in gas mileage when I replace both o2 sensors at around 120,000 miles. before is was getting average 30-32, sometime 28 and that was when I drove 60 miles 4x a week to work and back and went to school (stop and go 5 miles each day).
I believe that 96-00 civic have like 11.6 or 11.9 gallon tank, I know it is more then 10. Just some ideas have you replace the fuel filter lately? What about taking the injectors out and cleaning them real good with carb cleaner? How do you drive? If you are full throttle all the time from stop light to stop light or even crusing like 90 on the freeway then most likely your air/fuel ratio will be rich like .87 and holding steady, as I have notice with mine when I am at a certain rpm and mph. How heavy is the car? Is there stereo equipment in the trunk?
Just some thoughts. Hope I help.

A/c has an extremely minute difference when it comes to mpg. Like 5/100's of a mile per gallon of gas used.

11.9 gallon tank on 6th gens actually.
My '98 EX coupe usually gets around 300-315 per tank. I've gotten as much as 370 with half a gallon left though. It depends a lot on how you drive.

all city around my area with alot of hills and stoplights and i get about 280 per tank in my 97' EX coupe. and ive held it consistantly...i think thats pretty average for civics. i think 40mpg would be pushing it even if you were all highway driving and shifting 1-3-5.

Edmunds.com says you should be getting about 357 miles per tank with city driving. 280 per tank is crappy mileage. It comes out to 24mpg. You should be getting about 30mpg.
My '98 EX coupe gets better than that. I'm pretty sure I've actually gotten a bit over 400 on a tank once, all highway that time though.
