Default Piston to head clearence?

O.K. so I removed my cylinder head off my 98 JDM ITR motor and mesured the pistons to be 0.005" in the hole! An OEM head gasket is between 0.026-0.030" depending where you get your source from.

The big mystery for me is how much clearence do you actually need. Engine buliders like Larry at ENDYN recomends 0.044" piston to head clearence with factory rods and companies like mugen and spoon make head gaskets under 0.020" for the B18c motor?

I'm getting the quench pads welded in the combustion chamber and I want to run this motor as reliably tight as possible?

Thanks

Bump

OEM clearence 0.031"-0.035"
ENDYN recommends 0.044"
Spoon clearence 0.024"

Who has 20 hours of race time with a mugen or spoon head gasket?

Thanks

You might get by with .035" with a near-stock bore engine running factory pistons. I'd opt for a .030" Cometic gasket and you should be fine....
Larger-bore combinations running in excess of 10K need a bit more clearance.

Thanks, I was aiming towards just that combo, i will try it and let you know how it goes!

I got some good numbers with stock clearences and no head work, and I'm hoping running it thighter will help!
