Newbie to Hondas
Hey everybody. Just got my first Honda and I'm pretty excited! Just joined to see what is possible with my stock engine, I think it is a D16 or something. Like I said, I'm a noob! But I want to learn more. Its a 99 two door, and auto but eventually I would like to do a drivetrain swap to allow for a 5 speed (I hear auto Hondas aren't very popular). Any help is awesome. Also if you guys and gals have any useful links, it would be appreciated. My plans are to put a turbo on but first I need to gather the knowledge on how to do such a project. I am deffinatly no ricer! I wanna go fast but still have it be my daily commute vehicle. Can good power be made? I guess I will have to see. Any suggestions would be great!

Sell the car now, before you get to attached. And, buy a manual. This is coming from someone who has done the auto to manual swap.

Welcome to the honda world, My advice?
Research for months before you do something, you'll end up happier knowing you got what you wanted instead of spending money you didnt end up being happy with.
If your car is stock, i'd sell it and buy a manual.
Then turbo that.

so the auto to 5 speed swap is really that hard, huh? bummer, this is my second civic and both have been stock with autos and i have loved them. I have never driven a manual Honda before but i guess i will soon need to. are the auto transmissions really that crappy? there must be some people with auto hondas running quick times.
just get a manual... don't even bother with a swap i'm not trying to be an *** but seeing how you say you're a newbie to honda's i wouldn't go diving into a drivetrain swap so soon... thats just my .02 but the only way to really learn is to do it... so it's your call
and ya the auto is that bad...

As for the chassis codes... Though some two letter chassis codes are used often to denote a car as a certain generation, those codes might not match up to the actual chassis codes used. For example, though '96-'00 Civics are often referred to as EKs, there are no true EK chassis cars in the US. The '96-'00 hatches for example are all EJ6s.
The codes that are often used to denote a generation of cars are as follows...
EF = used to denote '88-'91 Civics (4th gen)
EG = used to denote '92-'95 Civics (5th gen)
EK = used to denote '96-'00 Civics (6th gen)
Your actual chassis code is printed in your car's VIN (Vehicle Identification NUmber). It is found as the fourth, fifth and sixth digits of the VIN.

Your engine code is stamped on the block of the engine. It's on the front side to the left as you're looking at it from in front of the car.
VTEC isn't always something you're going to feel. Stock SOHC VTEC engines often disply little more than a change in pitch when they hit VTEC.
Here's a link to the Temple of VTEC's article explaining several types of VTEC though. Keep in mind that variable valve timing (VVT) is not unique to Honda, though VTEC is Honda's version.

i agree...haha...
i do have a few more questions, after searching gave me no clear answer. when i see videos of fast drag racing hondas, i tend to see a lot of hatchbacks. i would assume that has to do with some sort of weight issue. i would like to know what the full weight of the coupe, hatchback and 4 door civics. if any one knows the weights of del sols, preludes, integras and crxs.
Welcome! As everyone said above, just sell yours and get a 5speed. I was once in your boat... My first car was a 98 Eclipse (back in 00) and it was an RS and an Auto so i was at hte bottom of the pitt often getting joked on. Anyways, often times autos sell higher than 5 speeds because it raises the value on kbb or what not. ANyways, I learned the hard way and had invisible hope... meaning I had hope for something that wasn't even there... I then got lucky and traded it straight up for a 2000 Honda Civic and boom... Here i am now...

Maybe it depends on who does the swap. But the 3 i've driven didn't feel right. 1 eg and to Ej6's.
The eg the pedal was too close to the brake pedal, the two eks pedal feel was weird and just felt unnatural. Maybe it's just the installs.

you guys are making me feel like ****... I just did my auto to manual swap now almost 2 months ago... I'm lovin it...
Total swap cost me $400 but thats becuase I had most parts including a 30K mile tranny.. Well yea I could see the swap costing a ton if you have nothing... so yea... I guess not worth it. All worked out great with me though, it's just that this STUPID shift **** keeps coming loose (yea its a walmart one). The **** itself is beautiful and metal (cobra style) but it's the sleeves that come with it that are made of poop plastic..
I grind 3rd sometimes because the stupid **** moves about 3/4 of an inch back and fourth and leads me to believe that it's actually in gear..... Need to go to home depot or something tonight and pick up a plastic sleeve thingy... Anyone have an OEM **** laying around they'd care to donate?

There's a good possibility that has to do with the install and not that it was an auto to manual swap. I've heard of lots of cars with no problems though I've never knowingly driven a car that had such a swap.
