Default 91 civic DX misses

Hi, I have a 91 dx (stock-dpfi, 4spd), and it started to miss under acceleration. It misses from 1300- about 3300, then clears up and breaks up a little past 4800. It is the worst in 1st gear. 2nd & 3rd are usually smoother past the 3k mark. Its really more of a sputter than a miss. I think its the distributor, has a rich smell and its not as bad until the car warms up.

Here is my question. I have a running 89crx HF (wrecked). Is there any way I can put the hf distributor on my dx? Or can I use some of the internals from the hf dizzy in the dx one? Or even lastly, could I do a "Poor Mans Mini-me" using just the intake, injectors, ecu and dist from the hf and make it work with the dx? I've read a lot about mini-me setups, and I always hear "Si". Would the HF stuff work on the DX head? I'm not really looking for a major power increase at this point I'm just REALLY broke.

Thanks in advance,
Ryan

You may want to check your compression, those sputtering and missing symptoms remind me of when my headgasket was blown. Does the engine smoke at all?

You have some info confused with the mini-me you're proposing. First, a mini-me commonly refers to mating a VTEC head with a D-series block. What you're proposing to do is called a MPFI conversion. Most people use the Si manifold, injectors, etc. when doing this conversion. I'm not sure if the HF things will work, I've never really heard of anyone doing it, but if I had to guess I'd say yes. There are some extra sensors and wiring on the HF so you'd have to take those into account as well.

There is no smoke. I should clarify: It idles smooth. It doesn't miss under very light throttle, just under load when accelerating, or stabbing the gas pedal(sort of acts like a 2-step.) The stumble clears up (for the most part) once I get past about 3600rpms. Sorry, the mpfi conversion is what I was refering to, I had just never heard of anyone using the HF stuff on a DX head.

Thanks for the reply.

Ahhh, yes that does sound like an issue in the distributor. Are you getting any check engine lights?

Not during normal driving. Usually it codes 16 on the highway on 75* and hotter days. But its done that for about a year with no ill effects up until now. I've been taking it around the city running the ***** out of it trying to get it to code, but nothing yet. Just smells rich as hell when I stop. The sputter seems to be the worst in 1st gear, and gets slightly better in the others. Typically when it misses in 3rd, I can slam it down in 2nd and nail it and it doesn't miss as much. It almost acts like a throttle position sensor problem, but I don't even know if these cars have a TPS.

Thanks again,

Hmmm... 16 is your fuel injectors, that would at least explain the rich smell. Try fixing this code (go over your injector wiring and make sure each is spraying well) and see if that solves your problem.

Does it make sense that when I disconnect both green plugs from the injectors that the car still runs? I've gotten 3 different injectors from the parts store, and every time, they gave me the wrong one. Thats one of the reasons why I asked about the mpfi conversion. Also I can't find a DX injector in a junkyard either. I'm pretty sure that its the primary thats on its way out, but how could I check the flow, or even clean then off the car maybe? The car ran smooth until yesterday, it just wouldn't rev past 5600.

Thanks,
