Default How to mask properly for a rim lip?

I'm painting my wheels black, and i want it to have a red lip.
how do you guys approach it?

I am painting the whole wheel black, then i am gonna try to mask the rim off except for the outer rim, and then paint that edge red.

i'm also curious if you guys use masking tape for the masking, and how do u prevent the tape from pulling on the paint when you pull the masking tape off?

Use the blue 3m tape, hella good. As for how to mask it, use common sense with how your rims looks. I would personally just paint out a lip, sand it and make it nice, then tape off the lip with tape and paint the wheel itself.

how do u make the line between the two paint colors perfect? I tried doing stuff like this before where you paint then mask off, but the line created by the two paints always doesn't look perfect

you want to paint the lip first then tape off the painted lip (after it dries ofcoarse) then paint the wheel

as for getting the tape straight you can either lay it down by hand and make the line yourself

or you can put the wheel on somehting that spins then hold a marker so far away from the lip and spin the wheel as your holding the marker down

so if the thing your spinning the wheel on is not lopsided the line will come out perfect with minimal effort

then tape if off

or you can lay the tape on first then do the marker thing and then cut the tape around the marker line

do u guys pull the masking tape off while the paint is wet or dry?

someone told me to pull it off right after u paint so it doesn't pull like it would with dry paint.

make sure to scuff/sand the wheel first, i just wanted to make sure... paint will not stick to a shiny surface

I used basically the same thing as the blue 3M tape. Just a very thin tape then I used the green masking to finish the rest.
