i am thinking about buying an ek and doing the same. how much structural rigidity will you loose?
also, does any one know whether in the factory, say you have a 96-00 coupe, they just weld in the sunroof roof for cars with it, and the solid ones for ones that don't, or is there additional support?

I believe I told you this in an IM.
The moonroof is not welded into the roof. It is a fully different panel. There is one part numebr for the Civic coupe roof without a moonroof and another part number for the Civic coupe roof with a moonroof. That's just for the roof skin. The cars with stock moonroofs don't just have a raw hole cut into them, instead they have a smooth, bent surround that dips into the moonroof hole.
An aftermarket moonroof will have the seal around the metal piece. An OEM moonroof will have the rubber seal around the glass instead.
And I agree with ridin98civic. It does seem almost hit and miss on if it will be a decent install. Perhaps if you choose to have an aftermarket unit put in, you could ask to see examples of the installer's previous work.

i have a whole gsr sunroof assembly i was thinking about putting in my hatch, but labor and crap seems a lil high besides that they say it may leak but i have everysingle thing but yeah the rubber is on the glass and not the roof .. hmm -_- but there is a draining cover and tubes for the sunroof so doesnt that help the leak ?
Don´t you had the moonroof as a factory option for the ek hatchbacks?
My Hatchback came with a factory moonroof, but I´m from Germany. So I don´t know about the US models.

Bottom line do research on the place you go to. I want one in my ej6 eventually, but I'm going to a top dollar place because I know that the extra few hundred dollars is money well spent if it doesn't leak.
Structuall rigidity won't be an issue. But top heavy-ness might for tracking. But for most weekend warriors it wont be an issue.

In the US the hatch models (CX and DX) didn't have available moonroofs. The EX and Si coupes did though and so did the EX sedan.

I actually heard from one installer (he's been installing for decades) that it can help the car be more rigid. I can see who that can be though. The roofs with moonroofs don't have any less roof bars than the roofs without moonroofs and the edge of the moonroof could count as more support across the top of the car.

yea i sent you the IM after I posted this. I think im going to try and get the measurements for the size of the roof panel for a ek and em1 and see if they are the same. hopefully they will be, so i can just get the new panels from honda or one from a wrecked em1 (or ex etc.)

I've heard the exact same thing on several occasions. It makes sense but I haven't delved into any of the technicalities of it. I can't see how it would "dramatically weaken it"
The only thing I'd worry about as far as performance is drag and/or adding weight to the top most point of the car which can possibly affect cornering.

I can tell you they're not. The coupe is much shorter in legth. I have both a coupe and hatch in my garage. The coupe's roof is way too short to put it on the hatch.

That's what I've thought of too. The added weight... I wish I knew how much it all was.
Plus I know for at least some sorts of racing they might require you to block it or tape it off or something.
I personally would not put a moonroof on a coupe or sedan. The hatch would be the only body style I'd ever even think of it since they didn't have them in the US. And then I'd still want an OEM roof... so I'd see if I could collect the roof skin and headliner from elsewhere. I believe (I can check later) that the coupe/sedan moonroof internals and the hatch moonroof internals are the same.

EXPLETIVE!!!!
off to europe or japan to get an oem ek one i suppose lol
although you haven't done it yourself, just to confirm about what i asked in pm nofx, a good idea would be to cut the whole roof panel off, and weld a new one in correct? for example, this pic from ES3

Well, looks like the EDM part numbers for the coupe and hatch moonroof assemblies are different. I'm not sure if that means it won't work... but there's a chance.
There might be an inssue in the way the coupe's roofline arches, which the hatch does not.
I'll measure the coupe and hatch roof gutters here for a roof length if someone will do the same for a sedan. Right now I'm thinking the sedan will be a better candidate for parts perhaps.
Maybe the roof of the sedan will even be about the same size, which could lead to having the roof skin and headliner come from the sedan to be used on a hatch. Maybe a little trimming and then it'll fit?
