Unless there is a tranny with starter installed on the motor, you can really do a compression test. You'll need the starter to spin the motor.

you can check for a leaking head gasket by doing a leakage test. You use an air compressor and a gauge to pressurize the cylinder and measure the amount of air that leaks out (The gauge on the leakage tester tells you this). Make sure all the valves are closed when you test each cylinder. If you are leaking more than a few % then hold a lighter up to the throttle body and exhaust ports to see if the flame wicks. If it does noticeably, then you know where the air is going. If its getting passed the head gasket then normally you'd observe bubbles in the coolant, so try the lighter next to the coolant ports.

A fair price? Depends on how good of condition and how complete it is. I would not pay more than $500. Closer to $350 is probably about right.

Look for oil leaks. check the front and rear mains and also oil pan gakests. Also check around the water pump for a dried green residue, which could indicate a leak or the pump wheeping.

If you're buying it from a friend, dont get caught up on the price. What comes around goes around and if he's helping you, then you need to help him. Also if it is a bum deal, it sounds like a friend would take resposibility and make it right or refund your money.

around here a running y7 seems to go for about 100 and a y8 or z6 would go for about 150

dont pay more then that unless it comes with some goddys

i let my y8 with arp headstuds, new headgasket, new thermostat, skunk2 cam gear, fidanza fly wheel, act 6 puck clutch go for 400 so shop around if he is asking for alot

Thats a steal on that motor. As long as it's good, I'd throw him some extra beer money.

You can buy a leakage tester probably at most auto parts stores or sears. It's got a fitting that fits a spark plug hole and also an inlet for your compressor.
