2000 civic Si or 2000 GSR
hey everyone i was planning on picking up either a 2000 Si or GSR.. what would i be happy with considering power, luxury and looks..?? i mean i want an attractive looking car with some sort of speed??? all i've ever own was a 1993 civic Si hatch and now i think its time to have a car in the 2000's.. im looking for a good daily driving car.. all im really plannin to do to this car basically lowering it, basic bolt ons and camshafts/ECu in the long run.. not trying to go all out with the car..

Here are the differences between the Si, EX coupe and DX coupe since it will likley be raised again.
Do you plan on swapping? With your choice of Si or GSR I'm assuming no. If you're not planning on swapping, I'd go with the GSR. If you do plan on swapping, I'd go with a lower trim Civic. The extra stuff on the Si (explained in the table) can be added on or even improved upon if you choice to buy a lower trimed Civic.
Hope this helps.

Edit: Turned it into a link instead since it's so big!

I'm not entirely sure of the marketing logic of it, but Honda very often presents us various choices inside their product line that tend to appeal to the same buyer.
I had a 1992 Civic Si that was a daily commuter. By the spring of 1998 I had put a few hundred thousand miles on it and was looking around for a replacement.
In 1998 I had a hell of a time picking between the GS-R and the Prelude.
So I sympathise with the original poster and understand.
Good luck with the choice.

i've been inside both an Si and a GSR and they are both very nice cars. But the GSR seemed more classy and luxerious to me and the si seemed more sporty to me. Personally i would buy the GSR because i like the 1.8 liter engine over the 1.6 liter si engine. But thats me. Its a tough desicion i know because i was thinking about the same thing and coudn't decide. My friend had the same problem but he ended up buying the Si. Test driving both cars might help. Good luck!

^^ I have never driven either, but have rode in both and have had a b18c in my EJ1... go for the GSR. Just like blk_hatch said, its a little more luxerious and if you ever have to preplace the motor you can drop in a B18c(JDM) with no problems and even have all your emission devices... a plus if you are in CA. Both are nice cars and i think you would be happy with either. All up to you now. I do happen to like the CTR headlights and lip... etc.

on a side note, the Integra is going to be a little more to insure, but i would think that the EM1 would be expensive too because they are stolen a lot. I would go for a GSR myself, because the B16, although a great little motor, is not all that quick.

I actually had to make that choice a few years ago, I had an EM1 and a DC2 GSR that I was picking between. I picked the one that I got the best deal on (the EM1, I got a total steal on it because the kid was desperate to unload it). All things being equal, I'd pick the GSR, a little more power, ABS, nicer initerior. If you plan on upgrading later, then there's also a whole lot more aftermarket DC2/EG parts on the market than EM1 parts.
Neither car is particularly fast, they are peppy little econoboxes, but that's about it. It's pretty easy to make either one fast though, I ended up getting 408 WHP out of my daily driven EM1 and I still like a B16 for a boosted DD because they hold up to boost really well and they are cheap compared to a B18C. I recently got a B16 short block for my 4-door EG for $50 from a guy that just wanted the head for a B20/VTEC, try getting a deal like that on a B18C.
All that said, they are both decent, comfortable, reliable, fun little cars, so if you can get a good deal on either one, then you should be happy with it.

Power --> GSR
Luxury --> GSR
Looks --> ??? Both look good.
Insurance will probably be astronomical. My ITR was 30% more to insure than my S2000. I'm sure the Civic Si will fall into the same category.

I don't think the op is looking for luxury, because if i wanted something luxurious i wouldn't look at Si or a GSR.
Just test drive both cars, and see which meets to your needs better.

You can't go wrong with either car. You can even get the base models of either of the cars and just upgrade from there. save you some cash. It's all up to you.
P.S. GSR's and SI's both get stolen like nothing. So whatever you go with spend some time researching good security measures. Otherwise you will be hitting the bus a few months after dropping all that cash on your new car.

If thats not the case then for sure there is no reason to fork over the money 10-12K for a EM1 or DC2 when you can pick up an EX-LS model for way less and put all the fixings on the car. That is of course if you arent going for the luxury... the look is easily achieved.

Well I was in the same dilemma you are in a few months ago. I decided to with the SI because I love the body style more, plus Im working on a turbo. I like the interior on the civic better than the integra. Get into both of them and drive them both then come up with your choice. Good Luck!
EM1...i just love how the oem fogs look on them...Motor wise, both motors are a good start to work with. The b16 does lack less hp and tq but i think both motors are almost identical. Interior wise, the teg is FTW though the em1 dash is really nice too. Also you dont get the amber in the gsr....haha...so thats a downside.
well in my case in the end i chose a EJ8 (99 FBP EX) i had a chance to get a Si but was really in a rush to get a car at the time becuz of school complications. O well i still love my EJ8...everytime i finish washing it, i fall in love with it all over again haha....

True. The factory leather is nice in the GSR. Though a few Si's have leather, it's dealer option and that doesn't change that they have the same basic seat design as the lower trim Civics. They have little to no side bolstering.

Well, Hondas might be a passion of his. I know I'm into Hondas... and I actually prefer a little bit of luxury. It's nothing like VIP Style, but it's still better than holes in the floor and no interior.
I still agree that test driving both will really help with this. He needs to start scouting for cars he can test drive. It'd just be a lot easier to judge if we knew what he was really looking for and what his plans might be for either car.

Yes, the link I provided in the third post has almost everything different between the two cars. It's very easy to make an Si clone out of an EX coupe. Plus then you can choice whichever engine swap you might like.
Torque on B18 > torque on B16.
And the overseas front end conversion on an Integra > '99-'00 Civic front.
