Type-R Appraisal - Good idea?
So for those of you who didn't know, my 2001 PY ITR was stolen and stripped. The insurance company declared it a total loss, so we are trying to agree on a value. The only 2001 PY ITR for sale in Arizona was going for $20K+, so I told them their offer of less than $15K was too low. So the insurance company told me that I could get an auto appraiser, and they would do the same and then these two guys would try to agree on a value.
Now, I am a little hesitant to do this only because WTF does some auto appraiser know about a Type-R and its value? My point being, I am looking for Type-R's for sale that are similar to mine, and get a much higher value. What does an auto appraiser do differently?
My gut feeling is that an auto appraiser would be a bad idea, and not help me at all. What does everyone think? If I did get one, I need a guy (in Arizona) who at least knows something about a Type-R and it is not just another "rice rocket"

I should probably mention that I am also asked them to send me the market report they had listing the values of Integra Type-Rs. The guy said there were two or three listed on there below $10K, and I told him they were either fake or wrecked, and I could check the VINs easily enough.
I am collecting ads, but the adjuster said they look at actual sale prices, not asking prices. I am going to argue that the car is so rare, there is limited sales data, and that asking prices are completely reasonable given that no person would list a car for a totally unreasonable price as it would not be in their best interest. Within a few thousand yes, but their offer is not within a few thousand of what I am seeing.
Thanks for the help and input!

Unfortunately an auto appraiser wont give a **** about the Type-R. Best thing to do is to find all the Type-R's for sale and bring that to them.
Your car got stolen, do you have GAP? Are you trying to capitalize on this? $15000 wouldnt be too bad. Dont be too greedy.

I am just going based on what I am seeing the cars sold for. The car is paid off, and I don't need the money regardless. It is a matter of getting what the car is worth; I respect the insurance companies wanting to pay as little as possible, but that just isn't going to happen.
Side note: I found my cars twin brother for sale! Weird!

i have a feeling i will have to do this...im saving all the ads for a 2000, and so far ive found them all over 17k. there is one exactly like mine that is within a 20 mile driving distance and has just 10k miles less than mine going for 18.5k. hopefully the company will see this and understand...
also the appraiser is a good thing. a person on ITRCA got her's appraised for $25k when the insurance company only offered her 15k. They finally agreed on 20k...

well after doing appraisal for several years now, let me tell you comps are based off of sales, not listings.

insurance companys base base thier comps/sales off of your zip code so made sure on your valuation they provide the zips are respectful to your location.

You are right that you need to find an appraiser that knows a little more about these kind of cars than normal. I had a 97 EK9 with a total ITR swap, more like a CTR clone, in near perfet condition, that was rear ended a year or so ago. I had $14,000 documented in that car. Insurance first offer was about $2,300, then $4,500 after I did a ton of research and sent them pounds of data on similar cars for sale. They still didn't get it, and didn't care. I got an appraiser who valued the car at $8,300. The insurance company agreed, gave me $8,300, sold me back the wreck for $700 (dumb asses) and I parted it netting about $7,000. So I was lucky and just about broke even after paying for a storage place for a year. My advice is like most others here. Do your research, interview a couple appraisers to find one that knows the score and go with it. If you're still not satisfied, take them to court. Remember, if you get to keep the shell, you need to figure that value into the overall settlement. If you get close to what you want take it and save further hassle.
i would hope a car appraiser would know atleast a little info on how rare the car is. once you mention the word RARE the appraisers attention should be there..
i know its a little late but maybe everyone here should realy look into getting the car appraised before anything happens.. that way you know where your car stands if something happens..

just gotta find the right appraiser...the person who was trying to buy my itr got his own appraiser and appraised the car for 5 grand more then then my listing price.
I too have been looking for one here in AZ for other reasons though. I have been in talks with one in Phoenix on 16th st. PM me and I can share with you the info of the company.
Well if I get an appraiser, I don't see why I need one even in AZ, just a good one. There is no car to look at, so my best bet is to find an appraiser who has worked with Type-R's before.
Any recommendations on people you have worked with or know? I will post on ITRCA to see if they have any suggestions on appraisers as well.
Thanks for the help guys!

I didnt read the whole thread...
but why not go to an Acura dealer and get them to give you a quote on what a trade in would be and how much they would sell it for? Id say they will probably have the best idea and your insurance would probably see that as a legit quote on the cars value.

I was thinking of that too. I actually think the local one for sale just sold, so that would honestly be the best estimate of the cars value. The one that just sold was the EXACT same year, color, and mileage. So it fits my car perfectly.

I agree with Migs
The car sold new for 23-24k
7 years later it goes for 15k is not bad.
I'd shoot for 2-3k but anything more than that is just getting greedy.
remember mods don't make the value any more

seriously..
tell the guy you'd like to see the listings! hell, if they're real, send them on to me!
have fun with the insurance.. when my 98 got stolen, I compiled a presentation of all maintainance that had been done, extras, photos, etc. along with an extensive list of similar cars for sale.. it took a lot of phone calls and negotiating, but I was eventually compensated fairly in the end.. the appraiser thing may or may not be a good idea. you might just call one and not mention the insurance thing and feel them out..

Well, I figured this was the case...
I got the market report from the insurance company...and guess what! Out of the 15 cars on the list, ONLY ONE IS A TYPE R! And it is listed at 20K!
I need to have a heart to heart with the adjustor on Thurs. to make sure he understands what car I have...
