Stupid newbie question...Sorry!
OK, like I said, this is gonna be a stupid newbie question...But I'm new to the world of Hondas. I have a 91 sedan with a 1.5l (i think the D series) but the camshaft broke for some reason. Was wondering if a newer 1.6l top half will go on my bottom half and work somehow? I know I've heard a lot of people having "hybrid" engines, but I dunno if this works. Thanks.

Yeah, you can do that. If you use a SOHC VTEC (D16Z6 or D16Y8 block code), you will need to change the fuel injeciton system to multiport, remove an oil restrictor from the block, and a few other things (search for mini-me).

Use this tool to make sure that you select a head / block / head gasket combination that will be friendly for regular pump gas.
If you use a regular 1.5 or 1.6 head (non VTEC) you should be able to just bolt it on and go. Don't use the head from an HF model CRX or a CX model 92 - 95 hatchback, as it will have only 8 valves instead of the usual 16.

like he said if you just want it back on the road and arent lookin to make much power. just get an a6 head. and put your old intake mani on and the rest of that crap
Cool...Thanks guys. Another stupid question...what would cause the camshaft to break? That's why I want to replace it...not sure if I have a bent valve or what, but I know they don't just break for no reason.
the camshaft actually broke?? only one thing i can think of, and thats if the distributor bearing seized.. but that is extraordinarily unlikely. or if you werent getting enough oil to the head i guess would be cause #2.. but i have never heard of that.
are you sure your timing belt didnt break?
if your cam really did break, then you most likely tapped some valves. but i wouldnt try to reuse that head until i found out why the cam broke.. just get a new one.. it would probably be cheaper anyway.

Yeah, the camshaft broke. I took off the valve cover and had a friend crank it to see if the timing gear was turning, because the rotor wasn't on the other side. Only the first couple of valves were moving and the 1st lobe of the camshaft. So it may be the distributor bearing, but why would it break so far across? I'm thinking valves, but I'm not positive. Replacement of the head was the intent of my asking about the d16 head. Thanks for all your help guys, I really appreciate it.
that actually makes a lot of sense if it broke by the number 1 cylinder. the torque exerted by the seized bearing would have increased stress on the metal the closer it got to the cam gear, until the point where it broke.
swap the head and get a new distributor. a6 heads should be easy to find, or you could take this opportunity to swap a vtec head and go mpfi.. if youve got the money for it.
