I am about to shave the bay on my 87 crx but first I would like to know if a 220 welder (I think that is what this is called) will work. I will have to talk to my brotehr in law to get the exact specs but just wanted to see if this will work...

not sure what welder your thinking of, but for welding sheet metal on cars you typically need a wire fed MIG welder with a tank of gas. I use 75% argon 25% co2, which I chose based on the wide thickness of material I use. A good guide to selecting the right shielding gas is this web site:

Now for actual welder selection, if you really only intend on welding sheet metal (or any material 3/16" and thinner) you will be fine with a 115V unit. Some quality units are the Miller or Lincoln 135. I personally weld a lot of stuff near or over 1/4" and have been very happy with my 220V Miller 175. You should be able to rent these units from any local rental store, I imagine around $50 for a weekend rate.
