Ticket Question
Ticket the FIRST time I ever drive the SI.. that's gotta say something about how fun it is
I live out in the country, and I decided to go out with my wife and just roll around the hills and get a feel for the new car. I was 100% set NOT to take it over 4-5k RPMS and let the engine break in nicely.
We're going along and we hit this stretch of road that is about 2 miles long, with zero turns, zero hills.. You could literally lay a marble down and it wouldn't move.
The speedlimit is 55, and the guy in front of me is doing about 50. My wife wants to see what the car and do and tells me to pass him, and me also wanting to see what the SI could do happily obliged. I kicked it down to third gear and passed him, and as I'm passing him I see a car come over a hill about half a mile away.
Right away I take my foot off the gas just in case.. sure enough as I get closer it's a cop, pulling over to the side of the road to turn around after me. Somehow he nabs me at 82 in a 55.
He was pretty nice about it, and absolutely shocked that it was my first ticket in ~6 years of driving. I must say I was hoping to hit 10 years without getting one, but I guess the stars were aligned to get me tonight, because an hour later I found out it was a school's prom last night and after the ticket, I started seeing cops everywhere.
Alright now that I've told my story, I have a question about the ticket. I know I could go into the court and see a judge (it's a petty misdemeanor since it's 27 (thank god not 30+) over and I don't have to see a judge.) and get the ticket reduced. However.. since it's my first ticket ever, aren't I entitled to take some kind of defensive driving class to get the ticked ripped up? I thought I had read somewhere that if you get one ticket in a 6 year period, you can take a class and take the ticket off of your record. Is there any validity to this?

well i dont know about getting rid of the ticket off your driving record permanently..but i do know that you can take a drivers class thing and get the points taken off your license. meaning there are no points on your license but they still know you have had a ticket. and that 6 year thing i have no clue about.
If MN is anything like CA you will get a letter in the mail and on the back it will have options to plead innocent, plead guilty, or pay the fine and request traffic school...

Every state is going to be different. The best person to ask is the old lady working the front desk at the traffic divs. Just ask what kinds of diversions and amendments you can get for a ticket. Be very nice and usually they will help you out. I just payed one ticket in Kansas for 15 over on a diversion 3 days late, and they took it.
If you cannot pass someone doing the speed limit then they need to move out of the way... Unfortunately the laws dont bend much and you will get a ticket for speeding while passing a vehicle... I know I have (78 in a 55, just payed it off and should be getting the traffic school paperwork soon)...

I'm not sure about the whole driver school thing, but you should most DEFINITELY go to court for the ticket, never just pay em.
I"ve never had any points on my license and I"m 23. When I was 17, I got a speeding ticket. I took it to court and got community service, no points. Recently, I went to court hoping to plead my case for my 3 point offense. Cop didn't show, and it got dismissed, no community service, no fine, no points, no nothing

In MI, usually on your first ticket they will drop the points and make you pay the fine and accomplish some other task. When I got my first ticket they made me write a 3k word essay on "the hazzards of unsafe driving".
Even if it's not a first offense, if your record is mostly clean you can take it to court and get them to waive the points on your license. You still have to pay the fine, but no pts is better than a sharp stick in the eye.
Only thing that sux is insurance will still see the ticket for up to 5yrs.
BOO

In Arizona we get to take a class every 2 years. I just got a ticket last week and I have only 6 weeks more till I would be available to take the class again.

An attorney cannot just make a ticket go away. All they can do is represent you in court and plead your side and present any "errors" in the charges and hope for a dismissal.
I would not assume you do not have any points on your license just because you had an attorney handle it.
If I were you, I would check my DMV record. It would suck to get pulled over and find you have a suspended license.

WA is reckless driving over 20, dont no about the jail thing. so far ive been lucky. I hit 115 on a 55 this weekend. stupid but a lot of fun. these cars are awesome.
anywho here in Washington St. you can get a ticket 'defered'. The judge gives you a period of time to be good on the road, or not get caught, and if you can pull it off the ticket goes away without any points on your record. if you mess up and get another ticket, you pay both and get all points against you. My buddy went through it, i dont think he had any school and the judge told him not to get a ticket for one year.

Adjudication Withheld. Read up on that term. Not sure what states it applies too, but I know it is used in Florida. You can only use it once, I think. I had to take a driving class as well. The ticket never showed on my record.

Depends on where you are at. the attorneys in the "good-ole-boys" club here in GA can get you out of just about anything if you throw enough money at them. I have a friend that practices law in my town, but he's a judge in two others and prosecutor in a third county. The "justice" system is a fallacy (at least the justice part)

"I got a traffic ticket and took traffic school to avoid receiving the points on my license. Why can’t I see this information when I get a copy of my three-year or seven-year driving record?"
"Three-year and seven-year Florida driving records contain only infractions that have been adjudicated by the courts, which means for which you were found “guilty”. If you received a traffic ticket and then went to traffic school to keep the points off your license, those points and the infraction are considered "adjudication withheld" and will therefore NOT appear on a three-year or seven-year record. Please Note: If you want to see all traffic infractions, including those where you took traffic school to keep points off your license, you will need to order a Complete Record. A complete Florida driving record contains all traffic infractions and additional information as determined by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles over as many years as are included on your record, as well as infractions reported by other states that are included on your Florida driving record during this same period."
