I'm not a BMW guy, but doesn't the "E" number refer to the engine displacement? For example: E30 M3 has a 3.0 liter engine, E36 M3 has a 3.6 liter engine, E46 M3 has a 4.6 liter engine...

E36 is the chassis code. Not like the model number as 325, 328, 330, 540, 530, 740, 750 the last two digits does represents the displacement I believe.

Bob,

The Exx codes are chassis codes not unlike your DC2; with regards to M3s, E30 is gen 1, E36 is gen 2, and E46 is gen 3 (current). Gen 1 M3s had a 2.3L I4 if I'm not mistaken, we've coverd the gen 2s and of course the gen threes are 3.2L.

Ahh, how true. I've not found a message board for BMWs nearly as good as this one. I guess that's why I still visit here once in a while. I WISH I could find a BMW M# board as good as al of you

Thanks for clearing that up! My BMW knowledge is limited to what I come across on H-T...

Yup...the quality of the BMW boards is MUCH lower than exhibited here and a few other noteworthy honda sites. The three sites I visit, http://www.roadfly.com, http://www.bimmerforums.com, and dtmpower (which I rarely frequent..seems hostile) are the only decent ones I know of.
