When to shift (GSR)
After driving my 3000GT SL for 3 years, I finally sold it and got a GSR. My question is: For casual driving, when do you guys usually shift?
I noticed that the car is a much higher RPM car than my 3000GT. Usually, for casual driving I would shift every 3.5x/RPMs in my 3000GT. With my GSR, it seems like for casual driving I shift every from 1st to 2nd after about 5x/RPMs, then I rarely even use 3rd, and go straight to 4th after about 6x/RPMs.
Just curious when everyone else shifts. I'm just talking about casual driving, I don't always red-line my car like a lot of you!

3-4 daily driven. and if your stoppin it. watch your RPM range in first cz some times you will miss second cuz the syncros( sorry if that is missed spelled i dont know how to) are moving to fast for second. But not really a problem if you dont power shift.
for regular driving... around 8100 rpm you'll be fine.
stickshift is a stickshift. shift around 2500 to 3000 for best mix of fuel economy and acceleration, up to 3500 or 4000 is okay, but generally just stay low.
btw use the search function, i think we covered this like a week ago.

what're you talking about?? synchros are moving too fast?? it doesnt matter what gear you're in, you can shift as high as the fuel cutoff will let you.
anyways, 3-4k is plenty for regular driving.

3 every gear in my LS....As long as I dont take too long to come off the clutch starting in first, usually in stop and go traffic I'm ahead of the traffic pack,if I'm not in the front of the light I have to wait to shift b/c traffic moves f_cking slow

yeah if you read the part that sais power shift look real close right there. sais not really a problem if you dont power shift. so i guess you dont. but when your draggin with a car that has the same power you win by shifts and launch. and power shifting is the fastest way to shift and to ruin your transmission because of the force you use when shifting.and because you throw so harsh and fast it is harder to make a smooth shift without either missing a gear ****** syncros (maybe mispelled), so yeah that is what im talkin about.

Im assuming he means that you cant shift from mid 4th to second without hitting a big problem. Did that once while learning how to drive in my Previa and the whels locked up on me and left a 20 foot long skid in the middle of the road and made me paranoid that I broke something.

i have a very simple solution to this 'big problem': rev-match. this seems to be a foreign concept to a lot of people.

Taking 2nd gear to 6k rpm then skipping 3rd gear seems like a waste. I shift in the 3000 - 3500 range. Sometimes lower if I'm really just chillin.
Back when I was 16-18 years old I was a little ricer and would shift pretty high for no reason. I'm over that now.

Just shift when you feel like shifting and before you hit redline....if you're worried about gas mileage then dont beat on it as much, its basic common sense....
I can also tell you from experience than constant 8600rpm shifting isn't good....my timing belt told me that

i go from 4th to 2nd all the time, haven't overreved yet. haven't left 20 foot skid marks either.
