Default knock sensor question

quick question...i've seen this done both ways and i'm trying to win a bet with one of my buddies, he's got a cel code #23 and i'm trying to help him get rid of it. when wiring up a knock sensor on a b series engine, you can use one wire going from the knock sensor straight to the ecu. you can also use say speaker wire with one wire going from the knock sensor to the ecu and the other not connected to anything, just grounded out on the frame somewhere. can i get some one to clear this up for me?

If the knock sensor only needs one wire to it. why not just pull off the other speaker wire? Sure speaker wire will work, but I would trust another "grade" of wire in the engine bay over it. I'd be afraid the coating might melt or something.
