st legal car!!)Anyone got problems with North American fuel?
Hey, just joined up here today. Looks like a good site. I've had an ancient 1980's 1.5efi Civic from Sweeden then a 96 EK 1.4i Civic (my first legal car!!) and after that a 94 1.5 Vtec (economy vtec
) Now i'm om the hunt for a CRX SiR my DREAM beast! Lol!
So anyway intro over, we all know that the japs use HIGH octane fuel from the pump. And over here the fuel is.... well... crap. I think the best we get here is like 96 RON, if that!!? And the japs use 106RON or there abouts. So is there gonna be a problem with detonation or anything? And will i be able to put in a performance ECU down the road?
Cheers.

Well it might help if you told us where you are, classified doesnt help. Most people have no problems running jap motors with 10-11:1 compression on pump gas. I dont know what ron is but we have octane and the highest is 94 at the pump. we use a research + motor octane % 2. how is the ron calculated?
Ok cool, sorry dude. I live in B.C Canada but i'm from Scotland and we use RON as our fuel (or petrol! Lol) grading along with Japan. I dont know how the conversion process from RON to octane works but if you say there are no problems then thats good enough for me manny.
hahahah wait I was just thinking about it. how do you know norty american fuel is **** if you dont even know what the actual difference is since you dont know the difference between ron and octane
In the UK and Japan we use RON
Mainly in the US they use PON
97 RON (UK) = 93PON (US)
So if the fuel is rated at 100 Octain it will have different properties of burn dependant on where in the world you buy your fuel, below is a rough graph on compatibility.
RON--- MON--- PON
90----- 83------ 86.6
92----- 85------ 88.5
95----- 87------ 91
96----- 88------ 92
98----- 90------ 94
100--- 91.5---- 95.8
105--- 95------ 100
110--- 99------ 104.5
I just found that conversion rating so if anyone can verify its content and if the North American pump says 94 then i should be laughing right?

That is almost correct. Our octane pump gas is usually:
87oc
89oc
90oc--------------And it depends on elevation what grade is available.
91oc
93oc
It will be fine to run it on 89 or better.
