Default 04 Si LSD and other questions

Well... now that I have found that the correct forum for my car is not the 01-05 civic forum, I am hoping that this is the correct forum to find out some info about my car (if it isn't well at least let me know). I am interested in installing a limited slip differential in my 04 civic Si. I do not know a whole lot about Honda and the technical jargon to go along with it (the yellow sign to the left of my post says it all). But I do know that I would like the LSD to help with auto X and so I don't get stuck so often in my driveway (is it just me or is the diff in this car very open). I am also interest in possibly swapping a taller fifth gear into my car to make the highway miles less of a drain on my gas tank. So if you have any information regarding these subjects I would love to hear about some solutions.

Maybe everyone's expecting you to search around some more...

LSDs that will work include helical Torsen diffs from Quaife, OBX (quality of OBX is hit-or-miss, apparently), the DC5 Integra Type-R, and the '06+ Si. There are also clutch-type differentials available; I'm thinking of Cusco, Mugen, and there are probably others.

A taller top gear can come from the TSX or '06+ Si transmissions. You could also install the 4.3 final drive from the 02-04 RSX (both base and Type-S models).

An LSD might not help climbing a snowy/icy driveway, though. If it starts to lock up (like it's designed to do), both wheels will start to spin, and you could lose steering control, letting the front of the car slide sideways. Besides feathering the clutch & using a taller gear to avoid wheelspin, I'd definitely recommend getting a set of winter wheels & tires.

I have been looking around but all I have been able to find is the Quaife for right around 1000 bucks . And that is a torsion type LSD and I would prefer a clutch type. I do intend to drive in the winter with snows, but having 2 wheel drive is better than 1 wheel drive in my opinion as far as not getting stuck and that has been my main problem in my 1/4 mile dirt driveway.

Oh came up with another question or two. Can I fit 15" wheels on my car or will the breaks interfere? Also if I were to get coil overs could I raise the ride hight of my car (useful during the winter and mud season)?

But thank you for the information on some possible leads for LSDs and the gearing issue.

The site I think of offhand for other LSDs would be King Motorsports. I'm sure there are plenty of others, too, but you might have to look under categories for the RSX to get more results.

The 02-03 EP3's came with 15" rims; you can put 15's on your car with no problem. And, yes, you could certainly raise the ride height with coilovers for the winter, but don't forget to re-align everything each time and keep the spring perches & threads clean & lubed so that they don't rust and get stuck.

Oh, and my point about an LSD being a possible problem would be that you wouldn't have steering control if both wheels are slipping. If just one wheel is slipping, at least you'd have the other one stationary, so it'll keep you from sliding sideways.

That's a problem with FWD cars in really bad conditions; asking the front wheels to do everything also means that when they can't do one thing (like maintain drive traction), they can't do anything else (like steer). At least with RWD the steered wheels don't lose traction due to wheelspin, and if you keep the rear drive wheels from spinning as well, you can still keep moving.
