91 Accord Auto Trans.
My friend just bought a 1991 Accord with an auto transmission. It has 120k miles on it. I got a ride in it today and every time it shifted, it shifted HARD. It felt like it was a manual getting power shifted. If anyone knows what this could possibly be post it up, any info on this well be very helpful.

every Honda 90-97 ive riden in with around that many miles in it shifts hard..try draingin the tranny fluid..drive it around for a good while..drain it again and maybe once more if you could...the last time put some honda ATF in it and a bottle of lucas and that will help a lot...if its slipping thats a totally different story.

yea i'll vouch for what the guy on top of my post said. i think its called "positive pressure shift" it happens to all all accords 90-93 from what i've heard. i have a 1990 accord automatic myself.... my car definitely does it. at first it was annoying. i owned several automatic cars and never had this happen... but i found out it was normal. you could try swapping out the tranny fluid....... i have'nt done mine yet (i'm a slacker)
yea if you drain the tranny fluid a few times and then put honda atf in it and some lucas it will fix it for a few months but then it will start to come back eventually its very common in the 90-93 and 94-97 auto trannys but dont worry about it...these trannys are built like tanks..now if you dont change the tranny fluid like your supposed to it will start to slip and eventually go out! so dont let that happen to you!
i've been enjoying my 91 accord ex auto for over 100k miles now and it just shifts hard.. . . i have learned to control throttle around the shift points to minimize the effect, but thats about all you can do. its just the high performace machine hiding behind the sedan!
if your motor mounts are good, hard shifting can be mostly resolved by a drain and fill with honda atf and 1 can of lubeguard for IMPORTS (red cap).
before 1998 honda did not retard timing/fuel during the shift and that is the cause of the firm shifting. It does not harm the car in any way.

i have a 90 accord lx with an auto tranny. i have the same problem. i have replaced my motor mounts but they keep ripping. i am tired of the hard shifting. i found new types of mounts that cost a little less than $30 each and they help close up the holes, like a filler which helps control the vibrations, item#8044556057 and the seller is energy-suspension-dealer. take a look and see if thats what you need.

motor mounts wont fix the hard shifting..like i said before 90-97 accords with auto trannies are going to shift hard like he said above because honda didnt retard the timing/fuel during the shift so its not unusual and doesnt hurt anything at all..all I can say is get used to it if your going to have the car for a long time or do a 5 speed conversion
yup yup, just take the time to learn your car. i've gotten to the point where i control the shift timing and force with throttle control because i know when it will shift and how my throttle inputs affect what it does - i've even tripped out my mechanic friends who couldnt figure out why the car was shifting differently when i wasnt throwing my shift lever around.
some people have to pay extra for a shift kit that allows them the solid shifting you're getting as a stock option!
