going from a 4.7 final drive type R tranny to GSR tranny.. am i saving any gas?
i have a GSR with a JDM Type R 4.7 FD. im about to get rid of it for a GSR tranny. will i save any good amount of mileage doing this?
Someone link them to the calculations of RPMS vs Throttle Percent. The lower the final dirve, is not always gas economical. Sometimes a higher RPM but lower Throttle Percetnage saves gas.

Well giys I have a complete jdm gsr swap and when I had my gsr transmission in the garage apart for lsd repair, I had a b16 transmission on the motor while I was doing the repairs. When I finally put the gsr trans back on I noticed a big differnece while I was traveling on the freeway. During the city it was about the same but on the freeway my car drove smoother then ever. I also did notice a difference in gas mileage. Thing is I get throttle happy on an open road to....
Hope it helps some

i drove 45 miles a day with a 98 jdm type r tranny. got about 320miles to the tank. with the gsr tranny i got about 340 miles....this is all freeway driving. not much of a difference really. only with the type r(4.7) the rpm is way higher at 70mph cruise.(and louder><

Once you get to 90 it starts to get a little quieter

It's all about lugging and vacuum. You can cruise 80mph at 2k and still waste gas if you're giving it 65% throttle

Same here. Sometimes putting 200HP to the ground in a little car can be an issue.
Of course, it's not clear that he means to lose the Torsen axle when he switches...he could keep it if he's willing to go through the trouble.
I guess I understand why he's thinking about it. I noticed driving to the little meet yesterday that I was at 5000 RPM much of the time, and I noticed when I was in Ross's car last night that he was over 4000 RPM most of the time.
Driving to work in my Accord, it's usually around 2300 RPM!
So, I understand why people wonder about it...but I still would not do it.
I mean, with proper driving techniques you're going to get 30 MPG in an unmodified ITR, anyway, right?
The gear ratios are just perfect, keeping you on the cam in every gear when you're in a hurry. I'd really consider changing my driving style instead of the transmission.

You've reminded me of a BMW test wherein they seemed to prove that the car they were testing got its best miles per gallon if you accelerated through the gears at a surprisingly brisk rate.

running taller gears might help while cruising at a lower RPM, but its going to change the loading at each RPM so you are most likely going to be stepping on the gas a bit harder to get up to speed. you might notice a difference on long cruises but it will most likely be marginal. I was running a 4.05FD in my ITR trans and cruising was nice at 3900RPM/80MPH.

thats what i call top end speed. did you ever max out your 5th gear to see whats your top mph be.</TD></TR></TABLE>
A. Thats a death wish since the stock tranny can hit like 158 or something...he would prolly make about 180 at 9k rpms or so.
B. I doubt he is making enough power to max out that low of a FD anyway haha
