Sorry to do this to you, but you need to search for smog or emissions first before you post. I know it is a pain but more than likely you will find everything you are looking for.
Then if you can't find what you are looking for. Then you have to give us more info like Car year, motor, and the results of the test, with all the numbers. What was your limits and what was your readings. Also include what you did before the test like a tune-up etc...OK

Even when you are going to get a smog the do a quick visual inspection of the engine and the warning lights before they even start the test... CEL is pretty much an automatic fail before the test even starts.
d16z6, failed by a point in carbon something? have a cat converter, didnt really drive it around before i went and got it inspected. had some exhuast work done right before i tried to get it inspected. They threw in what they called a turbo pack, looks like a resonator, was sapossed to quite down my exhaust but didnt really.

It would probably be best to clear the code first to shut off the engine light as California smog checks are pretty strict. Go to Autozone, borrow the code reader, plug it in next to your fuse box, turn on the ignition but don't start the car, press read, write down the code, press clear. That should probably shut it off temporarily, unless the problem is more persistent.
The clerk will also give you a nice little print out of what the error code means.
Hope it helps..
As to gettin a cleaner reading for your smog test... Several companies make fuel additives that are supposed to help pass smog. Some are even "guaranteed", whatever thats good for. Also, good sparkplugs and Chevron gas probably wouldn't hurt.
Good Luck!
