Default lean spots in a/f curve *update*

well my girlfriends dad bought a Innovative lm-1 and he wanted to test it out tonight. So we hooked it up and headed out. did a 3rd gear pull and then did a pull through all the gears togeather.

So we brought it back to the house and plugged it up to the computer and uploaded the files. Everything looked ok for the most part except it was a little rich. There was one spike in the 3rd gear pull which went to like 18 and there was another when we ran through all the gears that went to 20 or so.

Just wondering what would cause this.

We didnt hook up all the sensors like tps and map and rpm due to time constraints but we plan on hookin all that up this weekend and doing some more runs. I'm no engine genius but i think this is a bad thing and it has me a little concerned, just wondering if i should be worried or not.

Off the top of my head, when the VTEC sequence happens and the cams drop lower into the head...basically the crossover, there is a moment where the fuel is lean.

well that would explain it, and on the all gears run it woudl make sense because where i was shifting it never dropped below 5800 so it never dropped out of vtec, thats why i only saw one spike.

If you speak the truth my friend then my worries are in vain.

18:1 and 20:1 are extremely lean

is it a quick spike or does it flatten a little before dropping?

To be more specific on what I said above, when the car is at partial or WOT before the VTEC cross over, the ECU will be on a respective fuel map in regards to vehicle load and throttle position. When the cross over happens during VTEC engagement, the ECU will swap to yet another fuel map. That time it takes the ECU to swap from one fuel map to the next is more than likely the dip you are seeing.

ok, its not a dip but a spike. so the swap is what i'm seing. Will i be able to tune that out or is it always going to be there?

I think Jack at P1 has been able to tune out the spike. I haven't looked at his dyno stuff in some time however. But I do faintly recall seeing a few graphs where the crossover area was darn near linear with the rest of the A/F curves.

would you happen to know where i could find a af graph for a stock or mildly modded itr so i can verify and look at these for myself. Like i said i'm sorta a noob at some of this stuff but i like to learn what i can when i can.

are you sure you weren't decelling? when you decel, you will see a/f in the 18s-20s. i recommend you sit in the car with the datalog and watch the rpm's climb as the a/f changes. there is no reason to see any conditions that lean, even when you switch to the high cam map.

The world that is Honda Tech. I don't know of any specifically. You would have to search around and see what you find. Sorry.

positive i was not decelerating. i did notice the lean conditions through decel and some at idle, i knew those were normal. When we pulle dup the pulls we logged on the lm-1 and i saw those really lean spikes i was like WTF...

This weekend were hookin up all the sensor inputs for the aux-box and the lm-1 so i will have alot more info and post up the charts and stuff so you guys can check it out.

Just wondering is i'm safe here or what. These lean spots were at wot and roughly around where the vtec engagements were. Its hard to be specific here because we didnt have the tps or rpm inputs hooked up.

What can be causing this?

The lean peak is when you release the gas, when your foot is off, the injectors are cutted (no fuel at all).
That's it.

You can check it, I'm sure on each gear shift you have it.

but i didnt shift on the 3rd gear pull, and there was only one spike on the pull where i ran through all the gears and i would think there would be one everytime i shifted and let off the throttle. The vtec crossover makes more sense when i'm looking at the map becasue its a single spike...But i dont know like i said i dont have all the info i need here, tps and rpm would be key here...

anyone have a stock itr a/f chart i can look at?

He says this was during the 3rd gear pull. An 18 or 20 AFR under WOT would probably misfire and throw some codes. I never see spikes near the vtec Xover. You should not see a lean spike like that under load. If you have the TPS hooked up, you'll know if you let off at that point in time.

first off. is it using the right sensor and is it just plug n play to read the signal? if that part is correct, then you might have problems..

what is your setup as far as fuel/injectors/pressure regulator/what type of pump/ecu??

why all the speculating, once the data log is posted it should be pretty obvious to someone that knows what they are looking for/at

Could be an anomaly.

For example, if you are using the RPM signal as a reference, it could have picked up some interference.

That spike is so drastic that I wouldn't consider it to be there all the time.

Did it only happen that one time?

If it makes you feel any better, those AFR's look identical to what mine did stock.
