Default how can i tell the difference between JDM 97 spec and 98 spec ITR motors?

Im gonna buy one from a JDM importer, they have about 6 ITR engines there but dont know the years of them... i want a 98+ one

how can i tell the difference just by looking at them?

some of them have the metal oil cap and some of them have the black plastic one, i dont know if this has to do with anything

btw i tried search but with no results

Check the stamping on the head, right above the exhaust manifold. Pre 98's had the cast manifold while latter years had the 4-1. Search, there is a lot of info on this.

got it! Check your privates! Anyways places to deal in Toronto as far as swap and parts are:

http://www.tokyojdm.com
and
http://www.torontojdm.com/lite/index.php

only 2 I deal with for the last 7 years or so. No issues yet, great warranty and no shady suprises.

you can also look at the header. cast iron= 97 or older, stainless steel 4-1 = 98 or newer.

Yes, meaning the head was built in 97 and placed in a 98 model.

the stamp on the transmission can tell you also. I know my 96-97 says J4 LSD on it. I think JDM 98+ says something else on it...
