Default Need Help With a Tricky One

Ok my friends car somehow just completely broke and what he describes as what happened is unusual to me i cant come up with anything for sure. He says he was driving and pushed in the clutch getting ready to downshift, changed his mind and kept it in the same gear. When he released the clutched the wheels locked up. This is while driving at about 40mph. This happened i think twice. I had a chance to check his car out afterwards. First, the gearsbox feels like ***, all misaligned and undefined, really bad. Before you could start the car without pushing the clutch, now you have to. After starting the car it stalls when you realease to clutch in neutral. When you try to pull off it feels as if a brake is on or something and then stalls. I couldnt come up with anything on this one. Any ideas will be helpful.

that sounds like what would happen if he downshifter from say 3rd into 1st at like 30mph... is there any possible way, when he thought he was putting it back in the same gear, he actually went to a lower gear?

If this could have happened, then my guess is his tranny is toast, and or his valves floated and he might need a new head.
