ls/vtec problems
my buddy has a 1989 crx dx a semi-built ls.vtec. he has skunk 2 stage 2 cams, intake mantifold, throttle bottle body, pr4 ls pistons, arp rod bolts, head studs, b16 oil pump, gsr water pump and everything to make it a reliable ls.vtec. however, he is running a stock p30 ecu right now, with a obd0 to obd1 jumper harness. The engine harness is also converted to obd1 so he is running obd1 injectors, and distributor. his car is running very poorly. bogging down all the way to vtec and still not running properly when vtec is engaged. I know he needs a good tune and i have told him this many times, but it does not explain why it bogs down so badly even under partial throttle. he is throwing code 14, 23 which is idle air control but he has tried 3 different iacv's and that didnt solve the problem. the other being the knock sensor which shouldn't effect things right? does anybody have any guidance as to why his car is running so poorly? thanks for the help in advance. im stumped.
not having the knock sensor would be a problem. I think it would retard the timing quite a bit if its not plugged in or broken. I might be wrong in that though. Im not sure what to say about the IACV. Im guessing its plugged in. My friend had this problem I believe. He has an obd1 b16 in his EG and he switched the throttle position sensor and the IACV plug and his ran like ****. So check that out and switch the plugs. Mine is an obd0 and they wont even reach the other spot, but I guess obd1 can be switched. Just check it out.
we've seemingly tried everything with the iacv. i dont know there. like i said though it needs a tune but that doesn't explain why it won't run even descently until we can get it to the dyno. so without the knock sensor it will retard timing? therefore causing the car to run super rich and bog?
It wouldnt really run super rich. With out it reading the knock sensor the ecu will try to make sure that it wont knock/ping so it will retard the timing. That will make the engine have a big power loss.
Also, there is two vacuum lines on the throttle body, one right next to the other one, one goes to the map sensor and i think the other goes to the charcoal canister. I mixed those up once and mine ran like ****.
And make sure you check out to see if the plugs are mixed up on the throttle position sensor and the iacv sensor. Just check it out and switch them. Better just to check.

i had the same problem b4 with the car boggin like crazy not makin any power... and like sum1 already said b4 it was the knock sensor so idk maybe its not in this case but check the sensor see if its plugged in or broken cuz my sensor was just not plugged in and after that ran fine
