Default '93 Accord Halfshaft Replacement

I'm helping a friend replace the lefthand halfshaft on his '93 Accord auto. It started as a boot replacement, but the cv was pretty nasty so we're digging a little deeper.

Anyway, I found a few threads on halfshaft replacement. NONE of them mentioned draining the transaxle. I did this job on my Civic a few years ago and had to drain it. My car is a manual with gear oil. My friend's is an auto. I assume that the transaxle is completely separate from the tranny and will also contain gear oil. However, I'm kinda worried about assuming something like this and am afraid that if I pull the plug I'll drain his tranny fluid. That's not really something I'd like to get into.

I'll be buying a Hayne's tomorrow, but would like to know what I'm dealing with before going any further.

Also, if it is gear oil, can someone tell me how much and what weight?

Thanks in advance for any light you can shed!

The honda automatics use honda atf. Just use your 3/8 rachet for the drain plug.

It looks to me like the differential shares the same case as the rest of the automatic tranny.

There should be no half shaft for a 93 automatic accord. Instead, the drivers side axle is manufactered longer which replaces the need for the half shaft. When I changed mine, I did not have to drain my ATF; but the car was level. You can change the fluid; however, you may need to do it 2 times to ensure all the old fluid drains from the tranny/torque converter.

and btw, use only honda atf!

The term 'halfshaft' is kinda strange. Lots of people use that to mean one of the axles. For Hondas, it's an intermediate shaft across the middle, so the outboard right-side shaft is the same length as the entire left-side shaft.
