Need help replacing the axle...
Hi there. I'm replacing the front rotor on my 96 Accord. When I took out the rims from my front driver's side, there was grease all over. I looked where it was coming from and it came from the cover of the drive shaft? near the rotors (not good with car terms)
My question is...
-Is it easy to replace or is this a repair shop job?
-What do I have to take out
-Is it dangerous to drive this car?

So your CV boot is torn? Need a new CV joint? Is it making any noise when you turn the wheel or drive?
It could just be road dirt, OR just bearing grease.

Well the noise I heard like 1 in 100 times. It doesn't make any noise. The guy at autozone told me that the CV boot replacement is only temp, so i bought a whole CV. Anyways What do i have to take out?
Usually when your CV boot is torn, that is a sign that the whole CV joint needs to be replaced. There should be two pinch clips around the boots and then take the CV joint out and replace. OR you could just buy a whole CV axle from the junk yard
As long as your vehicle is level trans fluid shouldnt drain from the axle hole granted its not overfilled or something like that. Sometimes you can catch open boots in time to save the joint, but only way to guarantee the repair is to replace the axle assembly.
To remove axle from trans, after the outter joint is removed from the hub, just use a bry bar to pop the inner joint out of the trans. Once the snapring has popped free from the trans should be able to pull the joint out by hand. Just becareful to not tear up the axle seal when pulling axle from the trans.

thanks rsvmille. i tried to remove the one closest to the hub, but it won't budge. i'm replacing this on the drivers side, so i turn my steering wheel all the way right. it moves a little, but i think it is stuck to the hub. the huge bolt is out.

Do you have the CV axle apart from the hub assembly?
Make sure you have all the bolts and cotter pins out, then whack the back of the hub assy. with a rubber mallet a few times, the CV axle should slide out.

now i have the cv out. now i'm having trouble. fromremoving the CV from the tranny. pulling it is impossible. how do you do it? what is the trick?
And also, i'm having trouble from removing the wheel bearing from the hub (i'm changing the rotors too) So how do i remove it? I removed the 4 nuts in the back, and it should pop out. But it didn't. Seems like it was rusted. Will PB balster do the trick?

use a prybar, and pry it our between the trans and the Axel. give me a sec, i'll take some pics.
My car is 5spd, so i'm prying from the intermediet shaft. The same idea applys to you, just go between the trans and the axel.
Heres a pic so you get an idea.

Thanks for taking the time to take a pix of that. =P I got it out. I used a chisel and pryed it. Can't wait to put in the new one. Anyways thanks guys!
And 1 more help. I decided to just take out the whole hub assembly out. I'm trying to change the front rotor on my 96 Accord. I took out the 4 screws in the back. But the rotors still won't budge. HELP ME! What do I do to remove this wheel bearing?

lol, i use that tutorial/diy to change the front rotors. So far it only helped me a little. Anyways, I think it's rusted on. Do i bring it do a shop so they can press it out? or something???? any suggestions
take both hub assemblies out and take them to your local shop that has a press and have them press the hub out and put the new rotor in and press the hub back on..also while your doing this you may want to go ahead and replace the wheel bearings also..it wouldnt hurt..plus if you get everything back together and you find out your wheel bearings are shot youll have to do it all over again...anyways I had a guy press my hub and bearing out for 15 dollars
...the bearings were 71 a piece from napa

In that tutorial/diy, Desert-Honda states you can use a puller, or hammer on the rotor. Try hammering on the rotor more, since you are going to replace the rotor. If that don't work, then bring it to the shop.
Isn't it easier to do these jobs separately???? I like to do one thing at a time rather than teardown and do many things and then try to put it all back together.

I doubt a puller would work..for some people they get lucky and it does but most of the time it doesnt and a lot of times it does but it pull everything out with it, which means you will still have to take it to a shop to get it pressed out...best bet is to just take the whole assembly to a shop and get them to press it off...i mean heck if you can find alittle small shop that has a press get them to do it..thats what I did and the guy only charged me 15 bucks...you cant beat that! only took like 20 minutes to

If it all needs to be done you midaswell do it all at once..or atleast thats what ive always done..if I have a lot of problems and i have the money to do it..I do it all at once and get it over with rather than doing one thing one week and another the next week..etc etc etc..do it all at once get it over with and you wont have to worry about it later on!

another reman axles can be had for 60 bucks after core exchange.
alot easier and less messier than putting on new boots and repacking the boots with grease. if the boot has been ripped for a long time theres no telling how much dirt and debris could be on the joints

Thanks guys. I think I'm going to have it pressed out. And do i have to replace the bearings? I mean, i have it out, but is it a must? or can i repack it with grease as many cars can?
well when I replaced my bearings the guy told me your not supposed to grease them up on the honda..but I dont know about that...You might be fine...go and have thempress it apart and inspect the bearing make sure its ok....it should be but I went ahead and replaced it to save hassle in the future of doing it all over again!
