considering theyre somewhat close to the same price i woulc shop around and find a 98 spec with lower kilometers unless you can find a 96 with low kilo's since the "30k" mileage is bullshit when it comes to jdm swaps(lots of them have 100-200kilometers on them, the 98 spec has a 4.7 final drive as oppose to the 4.4 in 96/97 spec, if your buying the clip then the 98 spec clip has hid's, and if your buying the clip with suspension the 98 spec has 5lug,

So engine wise I can just drop in either huh. The only difference is the tranny correct? And is there any difference between the harness at all?

if u put any motor in that car older then that chassis is its not on the legal side of things... some state inspections that look over the car to let u get a title u can register find this and will make u put in a motor of matching yr or newer in it... if its gonna be a race car does not matter...

if your going to buy a front clip you dont just drop a motor in it you convert the car to a jdm type r 98 like ole boy said due to hid 4.7 final 5 lug conversion ect

Minnesota doesn't have any of those inspection things, and the reason I am kind of looking a getting a 97-8 rather than a 99+ is because it's like 2grand more for the newer one. And of course we will be doing the conversion. I found a 97 jdm front for about $5500 but the 99+ are like 7500. Is there any place that has good prices you guys recamend? And by the way I am selling the stock 2000 yellow front if anyone is interested.

Will it make any difference if i run the us ecu or the jdm ecu. And will this swap be direct or is there modifications needed. I will be going with a 98+ clip.

98 Clip i think also has a high CR, i dont remember if the 96/97 motors have the same CR as Us or not, also on the 00/01 JDM motors, has a bigger intake cam - basically CTR and that silly CF style Spark plug cover (well a lot a motors we get has them lol).
