Default B16A with LS Transmission...

For all you transmission guys out there, riddle me this: what kind of difference in gas mileage and overall performance does a hydro transmission from a B18B have when coupled with a stock JDM B16A SiR2.

All who have a Y21/YS1 (can't remember) know that cruising on the highway at 65-70mph sits your tach at 3500-4000rpm, which to me seems rather high especially on a long cruise. Not to say the stock B16A doesn't get bad gas mileage, but could it be improved by longer gears? I can't imagine too much change in acceleration, but you never know.

the acceleration change will be drastic. the b16 is a peaky motor so to put long *** gears on it will definitely suck. besides, your right foot dictates mpg more so than anything.

I have a 00 si, and I feel you on highway cruising. 4000-4500 rpms crusing sucks.

Instead of swapping the whole transmission, just get an LS 5th gear. It's the best of both worlds.. Same acceleration, but cruising revs will be drastically lower.

Oh and MPG might improve a bit, but I doubt it would be very noticeable. Remember it takes alot of gas to get the car moving, but not alot to keep it moving.

yeah actually if you go look the first 3 gears are almost the same in the b16 and the ls tranny the only big differance is the 4th and 5th gear... so dont worry about the "DRASTIC CHANGE IN ACCELERATION" because it wont be the only big change will be from 80mph on so if your in a stock motor it really wont matter because in the qt mile your only gonna goto around 90mph and when you set your cruise at 80 you will be at 3800rpm so do what you want to it shouldnt be a problem but y are you worrying about gas mileage? **** when i had a stock b20 I/H/E ls tranny and i could drive the hell out of it and still get 28-30 mpg so blah haha have fun

Also you might wanna check out this site, it shows all the b series tranny gear ratios. Compare the transmissions and make your decision.

I have that same set-up. Now i am going to a b16 tranny it feels so slow with that LS tranny. I take my car all the way to 8500 rpms and shift and i still fall out of vtec, now that **** sucks. I was actually thinking of putting a LS 5th in mine but hey expletive it i don't have that kind of money.

You can count on 0-60 times over 12 seconds, and 1\4 mile times of about 20, lol.

the cost of an ls 5th gear swap wont be worth the miniscule savings in mileage you get
