Default H&R coilover spring identification problems. Which front/rear?

Few questions about H&R coilover kit. It's for my '90 CRX Si. There are basically no instructions, and all it says is the springs should have an "F" or an "R" for front/rear. Didn't find any other info about it on their website.

Well, the buggers do not have these letter markings! So I need a hand. Here's the info:

One pair is 10 inches high with four close coils. Only marking is "250 - 60"

Other pair is 9.75 inches high with three close coils. Marking is "250 - 40" and they are about 0.25" inch less in diameter.

So questions are:

1. Which is front and which is rear?
2. What does the 60 and 40 mean?
3. The close together coils, do they go on top or bottom, and is that the same front & rear?

Only thing I'm fairly certain on is the 250 means 250 lb/in springs, correct?

Thanks a ton!

I called tirerack, where I bought 'em, they had to apparently call H&R to find out...

So they said some mumbo-jumbo which I talked over and figured out. Here's the final answer:

The fronts are the 250-60 springs. Dead coils installed toward the top.

Rears are the 250-40, dead coils are supposed to go at the bottom.

The fronts are flattened out on both the top and bottom edges, while the rears are only flattened at the bottom (dead coil end); the top remains round.

91ed9, after considering all this, you are right, the fronts seem to be just a tad beefier than the rears. Thanks for the reply.

Should be installing the coilovers tomorrow!

thanks.

interesting.

are the "tops" (as pictured) of those springs have a flat cut?

the flat cut should be on the top, yet youre laying them with the flat side down, yet the print is legible, which would make it upside down...

The fronts (250-60) have flat cut on both ends.

The rears (250-40) have flat cut on just the one side (on bottom in my picture)

How they are in the pic is how I was told by a tirerack tech rep (who said he talked to H&R today) to install them.

Why in the hell don't these companies make INSTRUCTIONS for the crap they produce. It really would make matters so much easier!

then that really doesnt make sense. the bottom cup of the shock is meant to fit an unflattened spring end. both front and back.

the top is most definately supposed to be flat.

once you take apart your stock springs, youll see what i mean.

technically, it doesnt matter how you orientate the spring as far as spring rate goes, just whatever orientation fits properly.

well if it's meant to fit unflattened end on the bottom, that's weird that the fronts are flat on both ends. And double weird that the flat on the rear is supposedly to go on bottom.

****, I'm so confused now.

I'll check out the stock springs when I do the install tomorrow and make a final decision then.

G-damn aftermarket ****!

I did some fitting and measuring just now.

The rear springs are about a half inch larger in diameter on the top than the bottom.

Bottom is just under 3.5" and top is at 4" diameter/wide what-have-you.

So they don't fit on the coilover adjust rings unless the dead coils (smaller end) are at the bottom.

Yea mystery solved (sort of)

Even if not a coilover, my H&R's didn't come with any instructions either. The front's perches for the shock were made for flatside spring end, and the rear is contoured to fit a full round end.
