Hondas are notorious for sticky oil rings in high mileage motors. Its an easy job to do, but cleanliness is extremely important. also chances are if you oil rings are bad, the bearings are probably not so hot either. might as well take the extra step, since it will be apart anyways. is the shop clean, or back yard?

if its a shop have them diagnose it, if they cant properly diagnose the problem they probably arent competant enough to do a bottom end rebuild.

leak down test *hint hint*

leak down will not show bad/stuck oil rings!!!! neither will a compression test. Please ask someone knowedgable to look at or work on your motor. I have done my fair share of quick and dirty re-rings. If you are careful its no problem. A moron can turn things ugly very quickly.

maybe not, but it will prove that they are not the cause in most cases.

Damn to replace rings they were going to charge you 500 with the engine in car or you had to bring it to them? If its in car thats cheap as hell becuase thats alot of work.

Yea $500 sounds really cheap if the motor is in the car. You pretty much have to take the whole motor apart. If you have the tools, I would suggest buying a Helms manual and doing it yourself. You'll save $$ and obtain a ton of knowledge along the way.
