Default A/C compressor whines, how much time before it seizes?

I recently recharged the A/C system and I notice that the compressor whines. especially above 2k RPMs. I've been told this is not a good sign. How long approximately do you all think it's got left before it seizes? Any benefits to getting it fixed now as opposed to waiting until it goes? Also, how much does it usually run to replace a compressor (I know it's not cheap).

did you over charge it?
did you lubricate it?
did you over tighten belt?
does belt need replaced?

It would depend on their (the shop) hourly rate. Usually around me the average rate its 30-40 bucks and hour for general matinece services. I changed about 10-15 compressors on late model fords and mercurys. It doesnt take me more than 30 minutes to uncharge the system replace the compressor and recharge it back up. But they can charge you anything they really want at the time. They could say it took them half an hour or 2 and a half hours. But youd be better of purchasing a new compressor. shops usually charge alot..

Patman:

I couldn't have overcharged it as it was making the noise as soon as I had enough refrigerant in the system for the compressor to finally kick on again. Also pressure on the low side looks normal for the ambient temperature@ 80 degrees F (about 35 PSI). Other than the lubricant included in the refrigerant I just added, I haven't added any additional lubricant. Belt is OK both in regards to tightness and wear and tear.

Alpinestar:

Thanks for the inside scoop. I should expect labor costs to be around 200 bucks or so then, right (on the high end)? Where would you recommend getting a new compressor?

Thanks!!

Great website! Do the remanufactured parts last or should I shell out the extra bucks for a brand spanking new compressor?
