Default JDM ITR TRANS ISSUES: ADVICE NEEDED

MY Jdm itr trans has been acting funny latley. I would have alot of diffuculity getting it into reverse but all else was fine until today then it started wanting to crunch going into 5th and not go in reverse at all. IT has done this before and a fluid change solved the problem until now. I picked up some honda genunine mtf today at lunch and i'm hoping it will fix it again. It basically feels like reverse isnt there, like theres not a slot for it. Also i noticed that the shifter would want to stick lenaing toward the 1/2 nd side of the shift pattern, like it was hanging up. This is a very expensive trand and i hope all is well with it, just looking for some advice or suggesations from h-t. Thanks guys.

Possibly a bent shift fork.

****, had this same problem with my gsr trans!

Walker me no likey!

So how will i go about fixing this? ANd how would the fluid have helped the problem befre. ALso this problem is very random, comes at the strangest times! Car has been sitting for like 5 days on in my garage on jackstands while i painted wheels and finished up the jdm front install. Take it out yesterday and this starts and then worsens today!

bump.

Had classes last night so i didnt get to work on her, but i did have a chance to get in and shift around a little on my way out to head to work. I jacked the car up last night and peeped under it, everything seemed to be in proper working order. I noticed that the trans was hot, pretty hot not hot ehought to burn me or anyhting but something to take notice of. Let it sit overnight jacked up then went out this morning and shifted around. It was still being finicky but i did notice that it felt like there was a notch there for reverse now and thats more than there was yesterday.

Still felt notchy and had difficulty goin into 5th and 1/2 the shifter still stuck leaning to the left after i would release it after pulling it from 1st or 2nd.

I'm gonna change the fluid today and see if that helps like it did before, then if that doesnt do anthing i'm gona check out the linkage and all outside components. If that doesnt work then i guessi'll have to drop the trans and fix whatever is screwed up inside.

Your 5/R syncro sleeve is the problem most likely. I had an identical problem and that is what the cause was. You tranny is in need of a rebuild, new fluid will only band aid if help at all.

5/r synchro sleeve? What is this?

Well the new fluid did help, i replaced it and it cleared right up. I just dont really understand how fluid would help. I was due for a change, but the strange thing is taht last time i was due for a change it did the exact same thing.

If anyone has any input on this i would really like to hear it. Thanks.

5/r synchro sleeve is the piece that selects between the two gear's synchro. if the sleeve is chewed up, chances are the synchro is chewed up. and if its really bad, the gear itself will be chewed up. fresh fluid might just help clean the surfaces of those pieces and allow it to work until it starts to chew itself again. Id be willing to bet your trans magnet is pretty full too. sounds like you need a full overhaul of the trans.

i know the magnets purpose is to catch the metal particles but i would have thought i would have seen at least one or two shavings inthe old fluid. I strained it throgh a very fine grate and did not see anythng. I even ran a long pen type magnet up into the trans but still got nothing at all.

I'm sure a rebuild is inevitable, may pick up some synchromesh and see if that helps any.

I drove it last night and this morning with no problems at all, not one crunch or grind or difficulty selecting a gear. I just dont see how fluid would fix a problem that was so severe that i couldnt even select 5th or R. But then again i'm not a trans expert either.

So are there any negative effects of me continuing to drive on it like this. Am i doing any more damage to it than if i just took it out now and rebuilt it. Thanks for the input guys.

well it wasnt low right a 2.3 qts or so. I checked it after i drained and strained it. The fluid wasnt too dirty, it was translucent gray color. I have changed it at other times and it be black. But it had roughly 30k-35k on it or so which is usually when i change it anyway.

I had someone ask me if i beat on the trans or shift hard. I quick shift and slam the gears from time to time when i'm getting on it but for the most part i really baby her and dont abuse it very frequently. But comeon you gotta cut loose every now and then .

I will throw this in there but i tink its irralevent but i was noticing a harsh engagement of the clutch that was very very faint. Like a little clunk that was very faint. Did that a couple of time but never did it again after that.

yeah man just take it out yourself and bring it to a local tranny shop. I remember seeing a guy on here brought his ITR tranny to a local shop and they put in new synchros, seals, and bearings. Charged him $783 US.

i found that its the 5/r synchro sleeve, its really chewed up onthe bottom side. I didnt have time to get the mainshaft out but on the teeth on the bottom are really chewed up. Hence i can get the trans in 5th but not reverse. A member on h-t had the same issue and it looks identical to my synchro sleeve.

I couldnt find my feeler gauge set today so i'll have to swing by sears and pick up some new ones. Thats really the reason i didnt get to start disassembely today. I leave for vacation sun so i hope to get the sleeve out and verify that thats the only problem and get the parts ordered so they will be in by the time i get back from vacation.

Picking up a spare ls trans while i'm in fl from a fellow member to limp around on if i need to.

trans cover off

top side of 5.r synchro, how its supposed to look

the next few images are of the bottom side of the 5/r synchro sleeve i couldnt get a good pic i was covered in trans fluid and lighting was bad so i did the best i could. I n person it is obvious that the teeth are really chewed up!

the inside of the trans housing

the bay it came out of

all bagged up for the night, gotta keep the dust out!
