ball joint replacement
can any1 tell me how to replace a ball joint? the nut fell off and the joint fell out of the arm on me at a corner, when the simi-stripped nut cleared the tip of the threads, the threads started moving with the nut. its on pretty tight but there's a little space some where in that area when the wheel is on. do i just tap it out or what????????????
did you take off the retaining ring? i hammered mine out after taking off the retaining ring, and then hammered the new in just fine, lubing the ball joint helps.
or you can get a ball joint puller/remover. It looks like a C-clamp except it has a bolt instead of a part you "twist" to close the clamp. I've never done it myself, but my friend has one, and he said that it makes it really easy to remove.

u still have to take the retainer ring off, thats what holds it in, after that, its easier to hammer the joint out than it is to use the cheapest press tool in town, @autozone its 100 deposit, thats the most i could go with while still having to buy both ball joints, i tried and tried and tried with that damn thing, i might have come out 1 mm but i couldnt get the clamp to turn any more, even after loosening and tightening again, that ball joint didnt move. i finally said expletive the bs and took my hammer to it, i figured its not gonna hurt an old ball joint, i tried to press the new one in and pretty much the same thing happened, except when i couldnt turn it all the way the first time i just took it off and hammered it all the way in, it didn't take but maybe 8 swings to get the new one in, i didnt even use the press tool on the other side, i took it back and got my money back so i could buy a new drivers side axle, i noticed it was way to mangeled while i was replacing that first joint, the passenger side ball joint didnt take have the time as the first without bothering with that press tool. it may be a little easier with a good quality press too that works right but its not exactly needed. i compared the i had to the one that somebody used in a DIY post on here and it didnt have the different variety of pieces that were needed.

You can use a deep socket to hammer out the old ball joints if they arent frozen in with rust. I did both of mine today. Then PATIENTLY tap in the new one add some grease to help... dont get carried away and start smashing.
