collectibility and worth of the INTEGRA TYPE R.....
after reading threads about theft and Rs "for sale", i just wanted to hear some opinions of others who plan on keeping this great car, 'cause for me, its a keeper until "the wheels fall off". i've been an avid mustang enthusiast since high school about 10 years ago when i first saw a fully restored 66 gt convertible, which led to my owning a 65 ragtop 3 years later. i loved that car, a true classic in red.
however, i heard in january 2000 that the "type r" was coming out in yellow and black, and i've always knew about the white ones, but these new colors poked some interest...so off to the dealer i went. i always appreciated imports even though i drove a stang, and all my friends were heavy into the scene already. anyway, i got to the dealership, and in the showroom was one of the most beautiful cars i've ever seen..surrounded by people like flies to -. it was a py, and next to it was a black with a "sold" on it. to all of you lucky enough to have bought a brand new r, i think you know the feeling.... that was it. i was changed.
i imagined it to being alive in 1966 when caroll shelby put his name on the mustang, and any shelby in any condition is worth many times more today than it was new back then. with sweaty hands, i drove my stang home with one thing in mind-gotta sell the stang. i couldn't sleep. after several months, the stang sold and i anxiously waited for the first yellow one in 2001. i finally dropped the deposit from selling the stang in november 2000 and drove away- i haven't looked back since.
all i can say is this type r will one day command the kind of reputation as classics like the shelby, and thus hold its weight in gold depending on condition. its racing history and birthright are almost parallel to the vintage racing machines from the 60's and 70's, right down to the limited production numbers and unique construction and details different from other models. its almost crazy to think in modern times, where fuel efficiency, safety, environment issues and other hurdles exist to make car manufacturers produce better cars for the MASSES, that honda would put this much effort in producing a type r, especially for the us market. all these oem parts will get harder and harder to find as time goes on, and prices will reflect that. jdm is expensive now, but i'm wondering how much an excellent set of red recaros will be a few years down...i've heard arguments on the other end, where its "just an integra" and it will all fall out of fashion. but if you take a few moments to put all the above factors together, plus the fact that you have a generation that will remember these times one day and will appreciate what once was...its almost certain.
its sad to hear about theft and people selling their cars because of it-its not fair to those who work their asses off to afford this chance....i don't know...even if i can one day afford to buy any car i want, bmws, benzes etc...there's just something about this car that will always make it special...i don't want no regrets. good luck to you that sell, especially to those r's fallen to theft

I agree w/ the above though, If I had an ITR, I'd Keep it forever. Hell, i'll most likely keep my civic Si forever unless of course i buy a CW ITR to replace it

when I bought my GS-R they told me I would have to wait more than a year to get one. So I bought a GS-R. Now I work @ Acura and see them come in for service and it drives me nuts. Love those cars.

You may be right. If any modern car under $50,000 has the markings of a classic, the ITR does. BUT, how many will survive 25-30 years?
If you guess that theft is 10%, thats less than 8 years(compound interest in my head is likely way off) until the last one is stolen.
I was thinking about getting rid of mine. For an extra 3-$4,000 I can sell my R and get a 1998 M3, and not have to worry about it getting stolen.

every time i go to a classic car show, i see a bunch of old guys arguing and having fun about 427's 289's, camaros, stangs, pontiacs etc....i can clearly see myself and others one day laughing about old b18c5's, h22's, 13 sec ets, si's...etc. can you guys imagine seeing the parts we have now at the pomona swap meet one day? for sale "jdm itr clock blocker-used only once-good condition $100"

I completely agree. I too think that the type-r will be a collectors items someday.
Look at all the american cars that are collectors items right now. What things to they all have in common? Most of them were pretty affordable to the average hard-working joe. They were often "special" models with different trim lines or parts selections from the normal models. They were produced in more limited numbers. They appealed to the enthusiasts that liked to drive them the way they were meant to be. They were loved by a rabid group of fans, and were the "pinnacle" of their little niche.
All of these things apply to the Type R. And when cars like the $60,000 "limited production" Lexus SC430 get 12,000 made per year, and 30,000 Civics are made PER MONTH, the roughly 5,000 Type-Rs in 4 years is a paltry amount. As theft and accidents continue, I think it's entirely conceiveable to have just a few hundred remaining in a few decades time.
All of that adds up.

I can't wait...it's been two years since the last time I saw them in action.

I remeber when I first bought my ITR. I was home for Christmass vacation with my wife. I allready had my 2000 civic SI and my wife had her altima. Luckly we had taken her altima home. We were driving down the road and passed the Acura dealer and out of the corner of my I saw the rear spoiler of the ITR. I told her to turn arround. They had just pulled it off the truck about 1 hour earlier and it had less than a mile on it. I talked my wife into driving it and then she told me to drive. I told if I drive that we were going to get it. I jumped behind the seat and took it up to about 6500 rpm. I was in love. All I had to do was talk the wife into it. we left the dealer that Christmass eve and returned the day after Christmass to get it. I can never imagine parting with it. I was never crazzy about the way it looked on the outside but I guess that has grown on me now. I love the performance. My only concerne now is speeding tickets. I can't help but to push the car. I can't stand to leave a light and not be in front of every one. And when going into a corner I love to nail it and feel the G's. Hopefully this car will not be the end of me.
i happened to be in the nieghborhood of the acura dealership, so i decided to go in and just LOOK at gsrs there was a ITR in the showroom. I instantly went to the bank to get a certified check. I showed up there and gave em 10g's as a down payment. picked it up 3 days later. ill never forget that day.
Saturday, Febuary 3rd. 10:36 am.
BTW--- the key word was LOOK.

To thieves, my car is a gold mine of parts to sell and make money...
To kids, my car is cool cause it has a low stance and mid wing...
To older people, my car is annoying cause it is loud and has a rough ride...
To me, it is priceless as it never fails to put a smile on my face when I'm behind the wheel
