Default annoying exhaust

hey I just bought a 99 hatch d16y8 with just an aftermarket intake and everything else stock. the exhaust is stock but it makes this annoying sound like a rattle or fart from roughly 0-4k rpms after that it shutsup and you just hear the motor. its really loud and annoying. any idea why it is making this noise?

there's a leak/hole somewhere. maybe someone poked holes in your muffler? cracked header? inspect your entire exhaust or try to isolate where the sound is coming from

oh and welcome to h-t, enjoy your stay read the stickies at the top and use the SEARCH button and it will be a most pleasant experience

yeah I figured that there was a hole somewhere. can't seem to locate it though. the sound is directly coming from where the muffler is, in the back. sometimes you can feel it rattle sitting the the rear seat

and thanks! will do that asap

btw, if there is a hole that I find somewhere in the future, how do you fix it? would buying a stock muffler work?

To add to what punoy said...finding wholes and leaks is pretty easy to do, just look for carbo buildup (black suit) and you will find your leak or hole or crack...if it is any of the fore mentioned

when I bought my 97 hx, it had an exhaust leak but the cars are so damn quite I didn't notice it for awhile. Mine had a nice hole rusted on the exhaust right behind the passenger side rear wheel. Let me know if this is it.
later,
robert

After awhile, the heatshields rust out, and they rattle at certain RPMs. Solved that by taking them out.

don't think its the heatshield, looks in pretty decent shape. I inspected the muffler earlier today and I noticed rust where the muffler hangers connect to the muffler. not sure if that is where it's coming from but the rust looks pretty bad. would buying just another stock muffler solve this problem?
