Default A/C question

Ok so ive done some reading and some searching and now I have a few questions.

My a/c doesnt work at all, so instead of wasting refrigerant, I bought the gasket kit
designed for my car. So instead trying to find the leak, I figured just replace all the
o rings. Since it has over 200k, most of them should be going out.

Now is it safe to start unscrewing the a/c hoses and all those parts. It is r-134

Mine stopped working the other day too. I put 1 can of refrigerant in it and it started working again. My mechanic tells me that EVERY car leaks out eventually. If it leaks out too fast <3 years, then that is a definate leak. I need to put some more in, but your A/C wont even try to turn on if the refrigerant is low.
