Default Datsun Roadster

please move if this it the wrong forum...

Up for sale is a 1967.5 Datsun Roadster 1600, one of approximately 6,000 cars produced for the half-year model run. The half-year roadster is considered by many to be the most desirable model because it combines the aesthetic appeal of the earlier cars, including the flat dash and low windshield, with safety features and improvements found on later cars, such as 3-point safety belts, a dual circuit brake system and more comfortable seats. I’ve owned this car for about 3 years, driving the car almost every day, and taking it on some long trips up and down the West coast. In all that time I’ve not once had a breakdown on the road – it’s been a very reliable classic.

Body
This car was originally painted #665 Yellow, but was repainted to a good standard in (near as I can tell) #664 Spanish Red. The paint now shows some wear but is presentable from 10 feet or so, and it still shines so long as I kept up on the wax. The previous owner told me there were some rust repairs to the bottom of both fenders, and there are some small bubbles by the passenger rocker panel, and also on the rear driver’s wheel arch. I think this is probably just a minor surface issue though - the driver’s and passenger’s floors are both super solid, as is the parcel shelf, firewall, and trunk floor. The chrome is all present and in good condition, and the tail light buckets were replaced with NOS units 2 years ago. The convertible top is present and in usable shape, but it has been patched several times and the frame is broken at one of the scissor joints.

Interior
Much of the interior has been refreshed over the last several years: the seats have been reupholstered, new carpets and carpet pads, new door cards, and a new premium reproduction dash-pad were all installed. All the gauges work, which is rare for these cars, though the clock runs a bit slow. Total mileage is unknown as the speedometer head has been replaced at least twice before. For some reason the previous owner removed the original A.M. radio and installed a blanking plate; I have a spare un-cut center console if an original type radio is desired. The heater core has been rebuilt, and the cooling system is running fresh antifreeze.

Drive train
The original, numbers matching engine was rebuilt in the mid 80’s, and it is still running strong and tight. My work has mainly been related to maintenance – all new plugs and plug wires, Gary Boone electronic distributor (a great upgrade and I understand he’s no longer making these), replacement oil pan gasket, air filter, fuel filter etc. I’ve replaced the rubber transmission mount and cross member, and it shifts well up through the gears, but downshifting into second takes a double clutch and a smooth hand. The gearbox is currently filled with Redline MTL, but I’ve heard Swepco 201 is the stuff to use for these ailing Porsche syncros. I replaced both the clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder – they work well, but the pedal travel is a bit long and may need some adjustment.

Suspension/Brakes
There are new KYB GR2 gas shocks and shock bushings at all 4 corners, yielding a firm controlled ride. I had new rear axle bearings and seals fitted around 6 months ago (I sourced the premium sealed bearings and they should last for quite a long time) and had the brake shoes renewed at the same time. The drum brake cylinders and those expensive front calipers and pads were all replaced about 2 years ago. The car doesn’t have power brakes, so it takes a hard shove on the pedal, but the new hydraulics and pads pull the car down to a straight stop quickly.

Wheels
The car will be sold riding on a set of 14” aluminum “8-slot” rims. A fairly new set of Mohave R/S tires are mounted, showing about 80% tread life left. Also available for separate negotiation is a set of American Racing Libre copies with Sumitomo HTR200 tires fitted (also 80% tread life left) including the correct lugs and locks.

Extras
When I purchased the car there was a roll bar installed, and the bar will go with the car when sold ($150-$200 value). Personally I didn’t care for the look of the bar much, but the floor is already drilled for this particular bar so I feel it should stay with the car – reinstallation would be a simple bolt-on process using the included hardware. I’ll also include a matching (mostly) spare trunk lid with a luggage rack. It’s the best of both worlds: the look of a bare lid for around town, and the utility of a luggage rack for road trips. Also included in the sale will be a top boot in very good condition, and several boxes of spares I’ve accumulated in the last few years. It will be a bit of a grab bag, but I know for sure there’s a spare set of carburetors, an alternator, aluminum oil pan, stock distributor, etc.

Asking $6,000 /obo. Please email zacharyminick@gmail.com to set up a viewing appointment.

This probably needs to be in the vehicles for sale forum of the Honda-Tech marketplace.

Cool car, though.

Definetly the wrong forum - and why would you put $50 tires on a car like this?

Do all the Vin #s match.

I was looking at purchasing a couple of these cars a few years ago. A runner and a parts car. While researching them I found that these are VIN'd from the frame and that legally the dash VIN means nothing. The ones I looked at only had 1 title for the pair and it matched a dash VIN not the frame.

Cool cars though.

Yes, all the vins match - engine, frame and body. I don't have a pic of the fram VIN, but here are the engine and body:

As for the tires, the Mohave were on there when I bought the car, and I like the Sumitomo HTR200s. I think they're a good quality tire, with good performance and treadwear for a decent price. no problemo.
