whats the hype/point jdm rims
I've noticed people spending hundreds of dollars on some really ugly *** wheels just because they say jdm. I always thaught the idea of upgrading wheels from factory was to get a better looking wheel, not something that look like a beer bottle cap, or a bean can lid.
whats the deal? please discuss,
another one the spoon rims. rota, nippon, spoon are all the same rims. why spend more money for the spoon?

1. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. They might be ugly to you, but look great to someone else.
2. People spend more money on authentic wheels because they tend to be higher quality than knock off's. Better quality control, better manufacturing process, better materials. Also, the resale value of authentic wheels is higher.

did we really need another thread on this? Throw some American Racing wheels on your Japanese ride and call it a day.

it seems like the other way around, people are doing it because its the new fad, new thing.
I got some nippon f2 not because they look like spoon, but because I like the way they look and they were cheap. then I found out they were spoon knockoffs, and when I found out what my friend pay for his spoons that looked the same and has the same castings I laugh.
then I started surfing the appearance section and saw how many people are crazy over these rims and had to ask why.
not knocking just curious why. I am sure there are a of things I do that people ask why also. to each their own. but this you pay for what you get **** is dumb when we are talking about rims that are the same just different stickers. or rims period

To me its resale/trading vaule, with Rota's all you'll ever end up trading for is another set of Rotas. But with Something like say MF10's, you could get a nice set of Desmonds or SSR's for trade. Thats just me, i love having a **** load of wheels too

If you are comparing two exact same wheels, from the same manufacturer....for example Spoon SW88 vs Desamond Regamasters; then you're right. They are the same wheels with different stickers.
But to say Rota's are on par with Spoon is silly.
That's like saying a knock off $10.00 Louie Vuitton purse is the same as a authentic $1,000 Louie Vuitton purse.
My gf would be quick to kick my *** if I ever made that statement. And she'd be right.
Just because they look the same, doesnt mean that they are the same.

For me, it's a 2-sided coin.
On the one side, I don't care what others think of my wheels, but on the hand, I enjoy the exclusivity of owning a set of wheels not many others have.

Especially in terms of build quality.

Last time I heard, Spoon/Desmond Regas are forged, not cast. But hey, what do I know.

Why buy a wheel that imitates another?
I prefer real "JDM" wheels, like Spoon or Mugen, because they were designed, engineered, and intended for racing. They have a history, a purpose, and a level of exotic-ness. Knowing the background of companies such as Mugen or Spoon adds to the appeal for me. I don't care if no one has the wheel, or if the wheel is quite common. Authenticity means something.
The appearance of the wheel is secondary. Form follows function. Besides, as someone said before, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Function is beautiful to me.
BTW, they are properly referred to as wheels, not "rims." A rim is simply the outer portion of a wheel.
P.S. This is the wrong forum for this question.

Good call.
On the same note, have you ever looked at the finish on an Evo and looked at the finish on a Rota. A friend of mine ordered a new set of Rota Circuit 8s. You could see bare metal through the paint. Not even 1 full coat of paint.

most girls would rather spend $1000 on the purse than the wheels... if you find a girl who wouldnt, marry her

Good point. There's a definite difference in quality of a Wal-Mart purse and a Coach/LV/D&B. I'm not saying it's enough to justify the price, but the product is certainly superior.
