gas and check light?
hello all,
i recently put in about 20 litres of 87 octane regular unleaded gas by accident
into my brother's 1999 Honda Prelude, (not sure what model)
also it's a manual transmission, from Canada...not sure if that makes a diff.
and now the engine check light is on....could this be because i put in regular gas
instead of premium? or just coincidence...that maybe something else is wrong?
what are the consequences of putting in regular gas,
and what can be done about it now, with about a quarter tank of regular gas.
(i won't be putting in regular anymore)
if i fill it up with premium gas, will the check light go off?
hope you guys can help, thanks in advance.

IF the lights turned on as soon as you started the car after pumping the 87 octane, and you think this is the cause then waste the gas in the car, or pump it back out, and fill it up with premium and let it run, see what happens, and yeah without the codes no one is going to be able to help you..
Good luck.
Good luck.
hey guys, thanks for responding
i'm not sure what the code is, or how to find out what the code is...
also, i tried as you said hondamanwill, and re-tightened the gas cap, but the
light is still on.

Sorry if I'm high jacking this thread but, I was also interested in what the consequence is by using regular unleaded as opposed to premium for the prelude?
I'm assuming it's a higher compression engine. Has anyone had any problems with running "plus" and using an octain booster?
Thanks,

Just fill it up with 93 and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes. If the light comes back on, you've got bigger probelms
And just as a side note, I have a feeling this past Easter weekend, they were selling some shittacular gas at a very high price. 1/4 of the cars that came in today were to get their check engine lights diag'd

any autozone or advanced auto parts store will run a free diagnostic check to pull the code and tell you what it is. dont just clear it by disconnecting the battery without finding out what it is first. and yeah, i would throw some octane booster in there to bring it up
thanks for the replys,
i just found out the code for the check light problem came back as
"0401" - exhaust gas recirculation flow insufficient detected.
and was told it would cost about $275 Canadian to replace.
the car has about 100,000 km, so would this be a regular maintenance repair.
or (as i've read in other posts) should it be cleaned?
