Default Shifting at 10,000 rpm?

In the videos DB8GSR posted, they're shifting at 9,500 and 10,000 rpm!
Whats the deal with that?

More power! If it still generates torque at that rpm.....

If it's the video I think you're talking about where it's just two videos of the cluster (one with music and one without), then it's not "real." His tach was not calibrated.

If you listen to the engine sound, it doesn't sound anywhere near that high. Plus his idle was about 4-5Krpm.

Anywho, it certainly is possible to have shift points that high. It all depends on the power you're making and the reinforcements in the head. You definitely need some hardcore valve springs/retainers. You also have to make sure that the cams you are working with even make power that high up.

Say you chip and spring a head with stock cams to 10Krpm. The power/torque will drop at around 7000rpm or near that. There's no point to go much higher, you'll actually slow down.

hahaha very well tuned Rs by the crazy men of japan that actually know what they're doing

these engines can handle those shift ranges if they are tuned correctly and have the right internals...

FWIW, I believe st00pid was shifting at 10.5k on a stock GS-R top end. He may have had springs/retainers, but I'm almost positive the top end was completely stock. I'll check on this though. At any rate, 10k+ is definately possible.

FYI I have seen a few B16's that were taken to 12,000+ stateside. Of course they were drag cars intended to last in ideal times for about an 11 sec stint. But, it is possible to make power that high, in fact remember only 120 ft torque at 10,500 is still 240 hp! So yeah the law of diminishing returns comes into play, but gearing and rotational inertia do have a lot going for them.

a good friend of mine with a built b18c, stock cams but springs and retainers, revs to 11.5k or so in his T66 turbo drag civic generating 670whp. Not relavent, but interesting none the less.
