Default About engine building and leaving off lower timing cover.

why would you want to run your motor with the lower timing cover off. is this something for just pure looks? also everytime you would want to check your ign timing you would have to pop the crank pully off, and put the cover back on... someone please sk00l me...

The pics you showed above are of engines in the process of being built. They are most likely not fully completed yet. If you'll notice they don't even have a pulley installed on them yet. Just about everyone runs the timing covers on street driven engines. If your smart you'll leave your timing covers on, it keeps small stones and other crap from getting tangled up in the timing belt which can cause some big problems.

yeah i would never take off my timing belt cover just because its going to have stones fly up in there one of these times...a lot of people with adjustable cam gears like to cut away 2 holes to have the cam gears shown, also easier for them to adjust...but besides that keep it on...why have a motor get messed up just because you wanted it to look good?

yeah, those look like the "while being built" pictures. not the "about to be dropped in" pictures. put it on especially if it's a street car. no need to risk it.

I had the lower timing cover off once and thought I would just take a slow cruise around the block to see how things were working. I made it about 200 yards and flipped a rock up in there and shredded the belt. Luckily I heard it going bad and shut it down with a little bit of the belt hanging on. Never again!
