Default The tale of an epic build

Hello, let me start off this thread by introducing myself to the all motor forum... my name is Matt, and I drive a 1994 Integra GS-R sedan. Over the past 4 years owning the car, I have learned a fair share of things about it (and Honda's in general). I have learned that the stock GS-R is a good all around car, with the potential to be a very fun and balanced car given the right parts. I had contemplated forced induction for this car, but ultimately decided that an all motor setup was the best choice to maintain the balance that the car currently has. I am not going to bore you all with expectations for the build in relation to wheel horsepower, or quarter mile times... these things will fall in where they will. My ultimate goal for the motor build-up is to have a fun and reliable power plant that makes for a good daily driver, and offers a nice useable midrange with a better top-end than stock (which isn't saying much on a B18c1). I have a good idea of the parts that I am going to use in this build, and I continue to research the parts that I am not decided on yet (the search button is my friend).

With the above out of the way, let me give you a rundown on what parts I have decided on for this build (from the intake filter to the exhaust tip):

Air will be drawn in through the Comptech Icebox... this was chosen for its all around design, and the ability to survive the winter months. A good midrange can be found in this intake box design.

A Comptech Type-R air intake will mate up with the Icebox and the throttle body.

Speaking of throttle bodies, I am looking to get one in the 65mm-68mm range, but I am open to suggestions on which brand.

The Skunk2 Pro series intake manifold (for a GS-R head) will be matched to the size of the throttle body, and then port-matched to the head. Any rough areas in the casting will be cleaned up at this time as well.

A Hondata thermal intake manifold gasket will help keep excessive heat from soaking into the intake manifold (if needed the gasket will be ported to the size of the head, and intake manifold)

The stock GS-R head will be sent out to Portflow, where it will receive a mild P&P and a valve job. The head will be reassembled with a full Supertech valve train at this time.

Valve control will be given to a set of Skunk2 Pro1+ cams, adjusted with Skunk2 pro series cam gears

The bottom end of the motor is where I am having the most trouble deciding on parts... I know that I am going to keep the GS-R crank, and will more than likely use a 81.5mm piston and the stock sleeves. I am hoping for a compression ratio around 11.5:1. I feel that it would be a good CR for the cams in use, and is still able to run the 91 octane horse-**** that is Northern California gas. I would love to run a good forged piston, and after-market rods as well (I feel better about the parts under higher RPM usage). As is good practice, the bottom end will be entirely rebuilt, balanced and blueprinted. The GS-R oil pump will be ditched in favor of a Type-R unit.

Moving exhaust gases out of the combustion chambers will be the work of a nice aftermarket header. I am torn between the SMSP b18 header, and a Hytech header... I really can't go wrong either way, so that is a decision to be made at a later time (as in when I have $1,300 laying around)

Since I am building a streetcar, and live in CA I will be using a 2.5" catalytic converter.

Gases will then flow out of the cat and into the 2.5" cat-back system (this will be custom made, and mandrel bent to be as smooth as possible)

Fuel, Ignition and Tuning are all areas I feel better leaving up to the engine builder and my tuner. I know that larger than stock injectors will be used, as will a Walbro 255lph fuel pump. Tuning will be Hondata, at the request of my tuner (and for the simple fact that it works). The OEM ignition will be used, with plugs of my tuner's recommendation.

Now that you have an idea of where I am going to go with this build, let me show you what I currently have. I am a broke college student so this build is going to take me some time. I promise to keep this thread up to date, and will add pictures of the parts and work as it happens.

Thanks. 3 cars garage... the only car in it is my Dad's 1948 Studebaker M5 pickup. It is mostly used for tools, his truck, storage, and parking for the 5 dirt bikes.

Something along those lines... hey, if I titled it "The tail of an average build" would you have still looked/posted?

why would you get rid of the gsr oil pump for an ITR oil pump?

Honestly, I am going based on what I read a lot of on here. If there is no benefit or difference between the 2, then I would not change it... hmm, time for some more research.

all obd2 b series oil pumps are the same

for a tb i'd go with a professional products 65mm

you can get one of smsp's 1piece mild steel b18 headers for less than $1300 or a rage tri-y for even cheaper. both make good numbers.

Yeah all 96+ B series Vtec oil pumps are exactly the same. Just make sure someone doesnt rip you off. Dont pay more because someone says they are selling you an ITR pump and thats better than say a GSR pump.

My car is a 1994, so it is OBD1... is there a difference between the OBD1 and OBD2 oil pumps? Are they interchangeable with the unit I currently have?

i believe the obd2 pumps have an additional sensor on it and will fit with triming of the lower timing cover

all obd2 b series oil pumps are the same, not just the vtec ones

Integra's are heavy. I say while you have the block out have it resleeved and go 2.0L

I have been really thinking about doing that... I am already replacing the pistons, it is only a matter of sleeving to get a larger displacement (meaning that the 81.5mm and 84mm or 85mm pistons likely cost the same). This is going to be a fun build.

Being a 4 door, I might look into droppin a 89 crank in your block for some added torque cuz thats whats gonna pull that big *** around. The Pro1's are an awesome profile for your needs, valvetrain is more than adequate in the Supertech, and the header situation.....if you're serious, do the SMSP. Yes the Rage/Hytech/Ebay Special/MF/WhoIsDan whatever the hell header will be cheaper. But the simple fact is that the custom made header is going to make you more power, plus have better ground clearence. You have a solid build started, I hope you're able to finish it, good luck!

Keep your stock GSR fuel pump, it's more than adequate for your fuel needs, 255lph it totally overkill and just something you can save money on.

Thanks guys. I am appreciating all of the input so far.

USPS brought me another package yesterday... I got my Hondata gasket. I'm sure you have all seen them before, so no photos's as of yet.

yeah man, pistons are pistons, no matter what diameter or C/R. a 8.5:1 81mm piston costs the same as a 13.5:1 86.5mm piston. Just make sure that your deadset on exactly what you want, cause there is no turning back once the pistons are ordered. Good luck man, sounds like a fun build, and 4 dr GSRs have really stiff bodies, so for the weight, it will handle like a champ!
