usdm and jdm 96-97 itr tranny's have the same gear ratios and fd
98+ jdm itr tranny's are a hybrid type and consist of b16 1-3, gsr 4-5, and a 4.785fd

If you look at a gear ratio calculator on a 98+ jdm itr tranny vs a usdm tranny they are not off that much in 5th gear, the difference at 60 is minimal.

ok i use to own the JDM spec R tranny.. if u bang from 3rd to 4th gear u notice a big drop in rpms.. thats probably the only differece i notice from this tranny.. since the 3rd is a b16's gear and the 4th is from a GSR.. fun tranny overall.. but if u love drag racing.. shifting from 3rd to 4th might be a bummer

I borrowed this image from H-T member Bense. He has several articles about transmissions, and plotted their relative speeds/rpms for us here. You can see that the 98+ JDM ITR tras has a nearly identicle speed as the USDM ITR trans in 4th & 5th. The major difference is the shorter 1st 2nd & 3rd.

And as DC2SiR said, the easiest way to tell the difference will be the larger rpm drop from 3rd to 4th...

Why would you swap out a BRAND new transmission for something that could have been the exact same thing?

5th gear has nothing to do with it, its the FINAL DRIVE that makes the ENTIRE GEARING shorter on the tranny. I used to have a USDM ITR tranny. I later put the JDM 4.75 final drive in it. You can easily and clearly tell the difference in gearing. If you can't notice any difference, then you do not have the shorter final drive.

You don't know what your talking about. The USDM ITR tranny with a 4.7fd installed in it is NOT the same thing as a JDM 98+ tranny. The JDM 98+ tranny has the longer 4th & 5th gear in it from the GSR tranny. As the graph CLEARLY shows, this makes the 5th gear of both US and JDM 98+ trannies nearly identcile. And since the OP was trying to check the difference while cruising in 5th, it makes perfect sense that he cannot seem to tell...

Alright, I guess my head was up my *** when it came to overlooking the 4th and 5th gear differences. I thought they were the same. The point still being that he should EASILY be able to tell the difference between the two in first through third. There should be no mistaking it in the first few gears if he did indeed go from a US to a JDM ITR tranny. Agreed?
