HX Wheels. Rec. Me Some Tires!
Seems there are limited "nice" tires for 14" rims.
Once you hit 15" the sky is the limit.
What do you guys like for your DD/weekend car?
I'm thinkin 195's to get some more width and prevent bulging.
And since you can't search HX, i made a new post. So direct me in the right direction if you know of another similar post
Thanks HT!

Yup. The proper size depends on the car, not just on the wheels. On 14" wheels, you need 185/60-14 on a del sol, CRX, or pre-'96 Civic, and you need either 185/65-14 or 195/60-14 on an Integra or '97-00 Civic.

I believe HX rims are 14x5.5 and not 14x5.
For 14" wheels on your car, you can use 185/65-14 or 195/60-14. Either one will work. There are lots more good tires available in 195/60-14 than 185/65-14.
Brief recommendations:
1. If you care ONLY about dry traction, get the Falken Azenis RT-615 in 195/60-14. Supersticky on dry pavement. Downsides include fast treadwear (10-12K mile lifespan is typical) and so-so performance in rain. $61/tire at Vulcan Tire.
2. If you also care about wet traction and treadlife, get the Yokohama ES100 in 195/60-14. Pretty good dry traction, excellent in rain, and last a reasonably long time (25-40K miles). $75/tire at the Tire Rack.
3. Both of the previous recommendations are summer tires and should not be used on snow. If you need to use these tires all year round, including occasional snow in winter, then you need all-season tires. In that case, a great all-season tire is the Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS Pole Position, available in 195/60-14. $69/tire at the Tire Rack.

The proper size depends on your car, not just the wheels you are using.
For a CRX, del sol, or pre-'96 Civic, the following sizes are usually best:
13" - 175/70-13
14" - 185/60-14, 195/55-14
15" - 195/50-15
16" - 205/40-16
For an Integra or '97-00 Civic, the following sizes are usually best:
14" - 185/65-14, 195/60-14
15" - 195/55/15, 205/50-15
16" - 205/45-16, 215/45-16
17" - 205/40/17
This is open for discussion and by no means what you have to get, but as a general rule you cannot go wrong with these sizes.

I'm getting some hx's and I just wanted to know what is the downside of going with a 50 series tire? Also do they make yokohama parada's in 14 inch and ecsta's? I plan on going azeni's up front and parada's or ecstas in the back. I couldnt find any of these tires at the tire rack =x I guess i screwed up somewhere but can anyone give me some feedback on this? thx

I don't know of any 14" tires with a 50 aspect ratio.
You should be getting tires with the same outer diameter as your stock tires. That's where the sizes above come from.

Kumho makes a lot of different tires with the Ecsta name. Some of them are excellent tires. Some of them are crap.

That's a terrible idea. On dry pavement, your car will oversteer; the back end will want to swing around on you. In rain, your car will understeer; the car will tend to plow straight ahead when you turn the steering wheel. Use the same tires on all four wheels, to avoid handling problems that are the result of mismatched tires.

We can provide some recommendations that will meet YOUR needs if you answer a few questions:
- What kind of car are these for? (year, model, version)?
- What diameter wheels?
- What kind of driving do you do? (daily driving, racetrack/autocross)?
- Do you need to use these tires in snow as well as in moderate to warm temperatures?
- Do you care mostly about performance, or do you also care about value (purchase price and treadlife)?

Those are crappy tires. If you really need all-season tires (because you will be using the same tires in winter as the rest of the year), the Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS Pole Position is much better in every way, for about the same money. And if you're not using them in snow, the Yokohama ES100 is even better than that.

thx nsx...well I have a 96 dx hatch and will be putting HX wheels on it, I'm a student so a lot of daily driving is done and plan on doing some autocross/drag a bit in the future. I live in Florida so it's mainly warm to very hot temps and lots of rain. I care about performance and price...life...well tires all wear out eventually so i know i'm going to replace them eventually but tire life is not that big of an issue. I mean to say Kumho Ecsta SPT i believe they are called...I heard they were good as well as the Es-100. But I have heard nothing but good stuff when it comes to the Azeni's except that they aren't good in the rain. Thanks for the help =D

I would get the Yokohama ES100 in 185/60-14* for your '96 Civic DX hatchback. The SPT is very good but it isn't available in 14" sizes, so it's not an option for those wheels. The Azenis offers great traction on dry pavement but the bigger downside (besides wet traction) is that they only last 10-12K miles, compared with 25-40K miles for the ES100 and SPT.
* Note that I am recommending a different size for your '96 Civic DX hatchback from the other fellow's '96 Civic EX. That's intentional. It's because in '96, the DX and hatchback models had smaller stock size tires than the other Civic models.

I bet you none of them have also tried summer tires (just about ALL of which are better than all-seasons) or the best all-season tires available (Kumho ASX, Bridgestone RE960AS, Pirelli PZero Nero M&S, Avon Tech M550AS, Michelin Pilot Sport AS).
That's the problem with information like in the Tire Rack's "user survey results". People who buy the same crappy tires, set after set after set, give them good marks because they've never tried anything better.
By comparison with many other tires you can get for the same money in most sizes, the Falken Ziex ZE-512 is CRAP. And there are lots of other people who know it, too (in this and other forums).
