Default OT: The S2K Finally Gets an R in it's Name

S2000 CR was announced today.

Vids from Honda

taken from TOV
"The S2000 CR was unveiled to select members of the media on April 3, 2007 at the Lotus Space in New York City. We were fortunate enough to be included in that group, and below are some photos from last evening's gathering.

Overall we think the car looks okay, but we're most interested in the performance upgrade of the new componentry. The faux suede seat and door panel trim is nice, but the yellow mesh inserts don't quite do it for us visually. All of the body work is said to be 100% functional though along with the additional chassis bracing it does add back a bit of the weight that was trimmed elsewhere. The seats feel quite good to sit in and the shortened shifter action felt quite good, though of course we were rowing the gears while the car wasn't running.

The prototype on display was supposed to have been rigged so we could see the revised dash layout, but the lighting wasn't working properly, so we've only seen it in the press photos (available here). We think the revision is a step in the right direction - we always thought the AP2's gauge design evoked too many rainbow shapes - now the tach, water temp gauge, and fuel gauge make up 3 parts of a continous arc.

Product planner Gary Robinson was quick to point out that the CR's Bridgestone Potenza RE070 tires are essentially the same as those fitted to the legendary NSX Type R, with the CR wearing 215s up front and 255s in the rear - only the front aspect ratio differs from the NSX-R's. Speaking of the tires, the spare has been eliminated as part of the weight savings campaign. In its place is a pump/tire sealant kit.

Mr. Shigeru Uehara was in attendance at the private event last night. Uehara-san is the father of both the NSX and S2000. Unfortunately, the S2000 CR will be his final project at Honda Motor Company - he will be retiring later this year. We spoke to him briefly and thanked him for his hard work and his amazing achievements. We can only hope that his successors will be able to match his legacy.

The car shown here was painted in Apex Blue, an exclusive CR color. The CR will also be offered in 3 other hues that will be shared with the base S2000 model. All CRs will have the same interior color scheme (black/charcoal with yellow stitching and mesh inserts)."

NEW YORK, April 4, 2007 - "The club racer-inspired 2008 Honda S2000 CR Prototype making its world debut at the New York International Auto Show introduces a higher level of track-worthy performance and style to the S2000 roadster, American Honda Co. Inc., announced today today.

The S2000 CR will be available as an entirely new S2000 trim level when it goes on sale in the fall of 2007. The lighter, stiffer and more aggressive overall design is engineered to maximize the S2000's potential on a racetrack with the goal of substantially improving track times, chassis balance and feel. The factory-tuned roadster provides highly aggressive suspension settings, increased body and chassis rigidity, overall weight reduction and an aerodynamic body kit dialed-in for reduced lift. An aluminum hardtop replaces the convertible soft top as standard equipment.

"The S2000 CR is the closest thing you can get to a Honda-built racecar with license plate holders and a horn," said John Mendel, executive vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "Its features and equipment are designed to appeal to weekend club racing enthusiasts."

The full-body aerodynamic package reduces lift through large and highly tuned front and rear spoilers. Exclusive chassis features include a quicker steering ratio, Bridgestone Potenza RE070 tires, a wider rear tire size, firmer springs and dampers, larger stabilizer bars and a new wheel design in a dark gray color.

Substantial structural bracing has been added to the storage area previously occupied by the soft top, resulting in additional rigidity. The aluminum hard top replaces the soft top of the conventional S2000, resulting in an overall weight savings of approximately 90 pounds when removed (relative to the current S2000).

The exclusive interior is highlighted by unique cloth seating surfaces with yellow stitching, a unique spherical aluminum shifter and carbon fiber style trim panels. Air conditioning and an AM/FM Stereo with CD player are optional equipment. Standard features for the S2000 include 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels, ABS and Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA). While VSA serves to effectively enhance driver control during acceleration, braking, and cornering, the system can be disabled with the touch of a button when conditions warrant it.

Widely considered the quintessential roadster-style sports car, the S2000 is the performance icon for the Honda brand and combines uncompromising racetrack-ready performance with everyday usability. The S2000 rewards driving enthusiasts with a potent 2.2-liter, 16-valve DOHC VTEC® 4-cylinder engine and a precise, short throw 6-speed manual transmission, along with tenacious handling and a perfect 50/50 weight balance.

The renowned high-revving engine delivers 237 horsepower at 7,800 rpm and 162 lb-ft of torque at 6,800 rpm. Perfectly complimenting the engine's output characteristics is a compact, longitudinally-mounted, close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission that features a direct linkage for precise shifting and quick throws. Combined with a front and rear double wishbone suspension, precise electric power steering, and a torque-sensing limited slip differential, the end result is a complete, no compromise, performance package for the enthusiast driver."

Maybe i need to see it myself in person to officially decide, but from the pictures it is not very pleasing to the eye. Looks like the Blitz front end off that damn Eclipse in F&F. IMO the oem optional body pieces are much better looking.

I know performance can often out-weigh the looks of an automobile, but personally....if i were shelling out the cash for this one some things would need to change cosmetically!

To each his own bitches

still got the faggy, low revving 2.2 that the torque-obsessed US demanded, with the same amount of power. yawn

I agree with JonD. I was excited to see the thread title. Im not excited anymore after quickly scanning thru the article. Personally I think that blue color is horrible.

Agree with you guys. The color is not all that desirable. Maybe, hopefully, it looks better in person. Should have gone with classic CW. The kit does look like a Blitz kit too. Any mention of pricing?

I swear that thing looked like a Miata at the first glance. And what's with the horrendous interior?

They can keep the CR. Give us the CTR/ITR instead!

Both of the provided links have so so quality photos, I would like to see better shots of the car. I agree with the statements on color, I'm sure they have better colors lined up. That color definitely attracts attention, I can only assume that was their goal. It seems like the major upgrades are cosmetics and structural, but it seems like that are reproducing an R format: Optional AC, Cd etc...anyone agree?

I agree. It is certainly made in the same vein as the Type R.
Lighter weight, functional areo pieces, optional convienence features.
Minus the color combo, I'm digging it.

I DO think it's too little too late for the S2K though.

Yea, why wait so long to do something like this? I thought the S2k was to be punted from the line-up and then they say they will create a replacement, AND then they come up with this. Wierd.

It's suppose to be much quicker around the track, BUT I agree that they should do something to bump up power just a bit to help make it stand out. I feel like I could easily duplicate this car with any S2k for half the price. Just rip out the AC/Radio/ and convertible top and you've almost got your CR.

Honda builds a track toy as a retirement gift to its most revered engineer, and you can buy a copy.
BY MIKE DUSHANE, April 2007

"It’s significantly faster on a track, according to Honda
The result of these changes is a claimed two-second reduction in the S2000 CR’s lap time around Honda’s Tochigi test track. That’s a huge difference; you could add 50 horsepower to a regular S2000 and you might not see your lap time drop that much."

i like it.. maybe its b/c itll eventually end up as a collector's car.. News for thought, not sure how accurate this is..

Pricing
The S2000 CR goes on sale in the fall of 2007 as a 2008 model. The car shown at the New York show isn’t 100 percent production correct, but the body kit, spoiler, and wheels are accurate renditions of what you’ll see in dealers. Pricing isn’t confirmed, but it will certainly be more than the regular S2000’s $35k base price and probably less than $40k.

Given the expected production volume of less than 2000 units (no limit was confirmed), Honda will lose money on the deal, a fact that company representatives actually admit. Such corporate honesty is rare, but Honda can afford it. The S2000 CR is a fitting tribute to the man who put “Honda” and “performance” together in the popular lexicon. Let’s hope it’s a harbinger of more great things to come and not a last hurrah.

.....it looks like suspension and chassis bracing are most notable. it sounds worthy of the R in it's trim level.
