when i try to lift it out i hit the frame on the tranny side and on the pulley side. it's apparent it has to come out lopsided, but it doesn't seem to matter how i loop the chain. it still hits and comes to a standstill. any insight as to what im doing wrong?

 

take off the side motor mounts... and yes lopsided works best

 

mounts are all off, its the tranny and the pullies that are hitting

 

take out the radiator, take off the exhaust manifold. You should have no problems after that.

push down on the trans as it comes out till the pulleys clear the frame rail. then let the trans go so it can come up and to the side and clear the side motor mount bracket.

you will need to twist the motor clockwise (from the front of the car) if you want to do this.

 

exhaust manifold is off, and its not hitting the radiator. its hitting the frame rails

 

This really doesn't sound right, are you sure something (hoses, wires) isn't still connected?
I never had this problem on any D-series. Once all the mounts are off, it comes right up with a little rocking. I never had to take it out lopsided.
One chain on the tranny, one chain on the head right behind the cam gear.
Is this a D or B?

twist the engine a little counterclockwise so that the tranny is in front of the passenger side frame mount. to get enough clearence you will have to take out the radiator.
