Default replacing torque converter when replacing tranny?

If my auto tranny is slipping in first gear but drives fine in all the other gears is this indicative that my torque converter clutch is still okay?

What are the tell tale signs that the torque converter is going bad?

Thanks

what is the purpose of the torque converter anyways?

If what I think is right I think the torque converter is used to "drive" the tranny?

You might need a new 1st gear clutch pack. The cost to rebuild is about the same as a known good used auto tranny. You could replace the existing torque convertor or flush out the existing one.

No idea. Another thought came to me. If you locate the lockup and control solenoids on the tranny, there is a filter between the solenoids and the tranny housing. It might be something electrical too preventing the lockup and control solenoids from actuating properly.
