my bottom half of the heat shield broke off because of rust or whatever, my car is rattling so ****** bad that the top half is just rubbing on it... Am i able to take it off if i got under my car or do i have to take it to a shop?
You mean the one on the cat itself or the one on the chassis above the cat? The one on the chassis is just held on with 2 measly 10mm bolts and they tend to rust off. So yea, that's easy to take off.
I doubt its illegal. I wouldn't worry about it as if anyone did see that you didn't which would be hard for them to, I doubt anyone would care, including a cop.
you'd be surprised, im pretty sure that if you were to go see a california Ref, he would tell you to get a cover as a fire precaution. In NJ i dout you will have any problems.
whats with the sig Blk00?

Or, just remove the cat; remove the bolts that hold it on to the cat and than remove the one that is on the bottom of the chassi.

Sure, if he wants to do that, either way works. But he said the bolts were rusted so I'm offering the fastest solution..

screw two hose clamps together to make them longer and tie two of the clamps one and each end. need a total of 4 clamps
i couldnt get the bolts off my cat heat shield so i just crawled under the car and cut it off with tin snips. kind of a pain, you gotta cut by the bolts and by the o2 sensors. only took a few minutes though.
