hi guys, I read up on the OEM temp for the thermostat, and all I could find off of motorads website it that the oem temp is 172 deg. When I pulled the old t-stat out it was 180 deg. The needle sits lower on the temp scale, but its still 1/3 of the way up at normal operating temp. Will running the engine 10 deg cooler, effect fuel economy? More importantly effect engine life etc..? I'd assume it'd be easier on it. MAN, Ive been playing with hondas for 10 years, I should know this one, I'm not that wet behind the ears, I just need help. thanks.
maybe, feel better
its and answer, just not to anything you asked!
Sorry I dont know but my inital thought would be that it may help with gas, i can not see it hurting.

Haha, thanks man....I do feel better, hey youre allright! I did a post and I got bits and peices back. It looks like 172 is the OEM temp, so itrs probably fine.
Honda motors have been found to perform best when they're relatively hot compared to other motors. But I doubt that just changing to a lower temp thermostat makes that much difference. The t-stat will open sooner, but the radiator fan is still going to come on at the same temp. To run cooler you'd have to add more water to the coolant mixture, run a higher pressure cap, or run an electronic fuel pump.
Just re-read your post and realized that you haven't yet changed your t-stat. Just use the factory spec. And yes, heat does kill motors, but installing a oil cooler is a much better method of extending the life of the motor.

im kinda confused as to why you would think that a low temp stat will affect gas mileage or why a higher pressure radiator cap will control the temp of the coolant and what do you mean run and electronic fuel pump?? they already have an electric fuel pump so what do you mean by electronic? and where did you hear that hondas run better hot that kinda sounds like a bunch of nonsense if ou ask me.
